The study of the question of why Shakespeare's Hamlet delays killing Claudius in revenge for his father's murder is examined in light of the major critical theories from neo-classical to modern scholarship. An expanded treatment of the works of Fredson Bowers, Eleanor Prosser, Bertram Joseph, and Roland Frye, is provided to examine the Elizabethan background of social, political, and religious values. The experience of passionate revenge on the human psyche of the revenger is addressed through an ancillary approach provided through the works of the Freudian analyst Ernest Jones and the psychoanalytic theory of Avi Erlich. The purpose of this study is to review the relevant theories of Hamlet's delay, and to apply the wisdom gleaned from such an examination so as to create a synthesis that may best answer the question of why Hamlet delays.

Critic G.B. Harrison stands by this assumption and says “In the play which Shakespeare wrote, there was no delay”. But there are other critics finding the answer to the delayed revenge in the main character himself. But for sure there is some sort of delay all through the play, a delay that somehow is based on the behavior of the main character, Prince Hamlet. If there was no delay, Hamlet would have acted in a whole different way. As soon as he was told that his father had been killed by his uncle, he would have taken out his sword and simply killed the new king of Denmark. There would not have been much delay and self-doubt then. Hamlet’s act of revenge is fulfilled a couple hundred pages and thousands of lines later. The question comes to mind: Why did Hamlet delay so long in taking his revenge for his father’s murder?

"Since Ernest Jones published Hamlet and Oedipus in 1949, psychoanalytic thinking has changed profoundly. This change, however, has not yet been adequately reflected in Shakespeare scholarship. In Hamlet and Narcissus, John Russell confronts the paradigm shift that has occurred in psychoanalysis and takes steps to formulate a critical instrument based on current psychoanalytic thinking. In his introduction, Russell clarifies Freud's assumptions concerning human motivation and development and then discusses, as representative of the new psychoanalytic paradigm, Margaret Mahler's theory of infant development and Heinz Kohut's theory of narcissism. Using these theories as his conceptual framework, Russell proceeds to analyze the action of Hamlet, focusing on the play's central problem, Hamlet's delay." "Previous psychoanalytic approaches to Hamlet have failed convincingly to explain the cause of Hamlet's delay because they failed to recognize the profound connection between Hamlet's pre-Oedipal attachment to his mother and his post-Oedipal allegiance to his father. By placing Hamlet's conflict with his parents in the new psychoanalytic framework of narcissism, Russell is able to show that Hamlet's post-Oedipal allegiance to his father and his pre-Oedipal attachment to his mother are driven by the same archaic and illusory needs. Though on the surface seeming to contradict one another, at bottom Hamlet's two attachments, to mother and to father, complement one another and work together to produce in Hamlet a conflicted ambivalence that propels him to his self-induced destruction.
