Excerpt from Half-Yearly Abstract of the Medical Sciences, Vol. 45 Prof. Leudet, in a memoir on chronic alcoholism, states the following facts gathered by him in the course of his studies upon this subject: - 1. That individuals who drink alcohol to excess present, at a period of that morbid evolution which is known by the name of chronic alcoholism, a collection of phenomena called the hyper sthetic form. 2. This hyperaesthetic affection is, from Leudet's experience at Rouen, more common than is generally imagined. 3. It consists in pain varying in intensity, generally deep-seated, now and then superficial; it presents itself at times in the form of a remarkable exaltation of the sensibility of the whole trunk and of the limbs. There frequently exists at the same time pain along the spinal column, analgesia or anaesthesia in certain parts of the skin, impaired motility, weakening of the muscular power, particularly in the lower limbs, cramp, and a marked exaltation of reflex movements. 4. This hyperaesthetic form of chronic alcoholism is sometimes followed by paraplegia. 5. The affections just enumerated depend upon disease of the spinal cord. 6. They are liable to present remarkable variations; when they cease they very frequently leave behind a state of infirmity more or less marked, and which consists in an impairment of the motility of the lower limbs. The infant demands more than three meals, and makes no distinction between the day and the night. The day Of the infant is a day of twenty-four hours; the day of childhood, as Of the remainder of life, has a duration Of twelve to sixteen hours. The three meals at present under consideration are the morning meal, the mid-day meal, the evening meal. These meals represent the wants Of the body arising during the intervening interval. The morning meal is intended to supply the moderate waste of the night, the mid-day meal the active waste of the morning, the evening meal the active waste of the afternoon. Excerpt from Half-Yearly Abstract of the Medical Sciences: July December, 1848 When, four years since, we ventured to seek for the "Half-Yearly Abstract of the Medical Sciences" a share of the approbation of the profession, it was not without many misgivings as to our own capabilities for the undertaking, as well as to the existence of a field for a new medical journal. The fact that the first Volume commanded a large circulation, which has been subsequently increased, and has been maintained, in spite of the many circumstances which have recently depressed literary exertions, has convinced us that, on the latter point, our fears were groundless; and, as regards the former, we are proud to be able to state, that in addition to the evidence afforded by a large circulation, the receipt of numerous and entirely spontaneous testimonies of approbation from the most distinguished members of our profession in this and other countries, has satisfied us that our humble efforts for the diffusion of valuable information in a form acceptable to all practitioners have been kindly appreciated. It would be ungracious here not to acknowledge the valuable assistance afforded by our talented collaborateurs, Drs. Guy, Day, Kirkes, and Mr. Ancell, to whose admirable Reports we consider that we arc much indebted for the estimation in which this work is held. To turn from these to less agreeable reflections, we feel called upon to notice certain ill-natured remarks and insinuations on the part of a few of our contemporaries. We do not think it necessary to defend the method upon which this work is conducted; it is sufficient to say, that we received the commendations of some of these parties, until it was found that our circulation interfered with their own, when they suddenly found something to condemn. That so many journals are now adopting the practice of giving "Abstracts" and "Reports," we take to be at least a tacit approval of our plan.
