Book Description
Excerpt from D. M. Ferry and Co's Wholesale List of Seeds for 1890 We herewith submit our Annual Wholesale Price List of Seeds in Bulk for 1890. We are from time to time extending our operations as Seed growers, and in the careful selection of our stock Seeds, the inspection and supervision of our growing crops, as well as in the care of our Seed crops when produced, to fit them for market, we are continually increasing and improving our facilities for supplying Seeds of a Superior Quality. Our Seed cr0ps are very fine this season, both as to quantity and quality, verifying our former statements of the adaptability of the soil and climate of Michigan to seed grow ing. Those seeds not adapted to this State we have grown for us, as usual. From carefully selected Stocks, by experienced growers in different parts of the United States, Canada and Europe. All these crops are also carefully inspected by us, and samples from the stock Seeds used are planted and examined on our own trial grounds, while the crops themselves are being produced. Therefore, the stock we offer is UN surpassed in quality, and is far superior to much that is offered by the many adventurers IN the seed business, whose stock, of necessity, is picked up wherever it can be obtained cheapest, which fact precludes quality. Being to them a paramount consideration. Our prices are as low as any Seeds of equal quality can be afforded. We again refer dealers to our motto, viz the best IS always the cheapest. Book Description
Excerpt from D. M. Ferry and Co. 'S Wholesale List of Seeds for 1891 In presenting our Annual Wholesale Price List of Seeds in Bulk for 1891, we can assure our customers that our crops of the past year are very satisfactory both in quantity and quality, and that our unremitting care in the past, in the growth, selection and improvement of our Seeds has been in no way abated. On' the other hand we have added to our already extensive facilities for producing' Seeds of. The best quality, a farm of over two hundred acres, which is devoted exclusively to the production of Stock Seeds, that is, Seeds from which those we offer to our customers are grown. This farm is under our own personal supervision, and no labor or expense is spared to bring our stocks to the highest possible standard of purity and quality. Those seeds not adapted to this State we have grown for us, as usual, from carefully selected Stocks, by experienced growers in different parts of the United States, Canada and Europe. All these crops are also carefully inspected by us, and samples from the stock Seeds used are planted and examined on our own trial grounds, while the crops themselves are being produced. Our prices are as low as any Seeds of equal quality can be afforded. We again refer dealers to our motto, viz.: the best IS always the cheapest. While we exercise the greatest care to supply every article true to name and of the very best-quality, we wish it distinctly understood that the success of a crop is dependent upon so many contingencies, such as conditions of soil and climate, mode of planting, etc., that we' cannot warrant our Seeds nor hold ourselves liable or responsible for any loss or damage arising from any failure thereof. If our Seeds are not accepted on these terms, they must be returned at once. Proportionately higher prices will be charged for quantities less than lb. Book Description
Excerpt from Results of Seed Tests for 1910 The seed tests herewith reported were made under the pro visions of the Pure Seed Law enacted by the General Court in 1909. This law was the outcome of the general agitation for a better quality of agricultural seeds which is being made by those interested all over the country, and New Hampshire may con gratulate herself upon being in the van of such a progressive movement. A number of other states have enacted similar laws which have operated for the improvement of seeds in regard to both purity and vitality, and so satisfactory have been the results that the indications are that it is only a matter of time until we shall have federal legislation establishing Seed Control Stations which shall have supervision of all seeds offered for sale in any state. Book Description
Excerpt from Kentucky Bluegrass Seed: Harvesting, Curing, and Cleaning The seed of Kentucky bluegrass forms an important item in the grass-seed trade of the eastern United States, both in the'domestic market and for export. In the absence of precise statistics, it may be stated that the annual crop averages from to bushels, with-a value of to In the progress of our studies in the seed laboratory a surprising variation was found in the percent age of germination of this seed. It was suspected that the vitality of the seed was injured at some Stage in the process of harvesting or curing. An investigation was therefore institutedwhich has involved an examination, by Mr. Pieters and Mr. Brown, of the field operations of the growers in Kentucky during the harvesting seasons of 1900 and 1901, together with an extensive series'of germination tests-conducted in Washington. This investigation, the first results of which are here with published, has demonstrated conclusivelythat the frequent low germination of Kentucky bluegrass Seed is in reality. Due to improper treatment during the process of curing'the crop, which results in over heating the seed and destroying its Vitality. The investigation has demonstrated, further, that this overheating is preventable. It is believed that a drying apparatus can. Be used which will obviate the difficulty and take the place of the expensive hand labor or expensive storage facilities which otherwise are necessary. Further experiments relative to such appa'ratus are planned for the coming year. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from A Report on Flax Culture for Fiber in the United States: Including Special Reports on Flax Culture in Ireland, in Belgium, and in Austria, With Statements Relative to the Industry in Russia Connecticut (storrs Agricultural School) - The seed having been received quite late in the season the best land for the experiment had been planted to other crops. The agriculturist claimed to have little knowledge Of flax culture beyond that Obtained from books. I visited this field in August, finding the straw overripe for the saving of both seed and fiber. The straw was short, though it would have given a flax sufficiently long for spinning purposes, and some Of it was quite fine. If the seed had been sown upon better land the experiment, undoubt edly, would have given more favorable results. N o attempt was made to save seed or to ret the product. The same drawbacks to the employ ment of flax as a crop in Massachusetts exist in this State. The expense of labor which can be more profitably employed in growing more pay ing crops, and the difficulty of finding clean land are particularly mentioned; The results of the season's Operations were so encouraging that the experiments will be continued this season, and will be more carefully conducted. New York - While fair success was attained in the two experiments conducted in this State, the cultivation of flax for fiber can not now be considered a paying crop. The special reasons for such a statement are given in the summary of the season's work on another page. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
