The Guyanese Slang Alphabet By: Edgar A. Henry About the Author Edgar A. Henry is the third child and the eldest son of Joseph Arnold and Iris Minerva Miller-Henry. He was born in Beterverwagting (BV) on the East Coast of Demerara in Guyana. He attended the Beterverwagting Government primary school under the tutelage of his father, who was the head teacher. His secondary education was at Tutorial High School in Georgetown. He migrated to the United States in 1973, obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in Accounting from Baruch College in Manhattan and later became a Licensed Real Estate broker in New York. Aware of the importance of communication systems to the Caribbean-American community, he established Sterling Communications Network in 1993, broadcasting “Calling the Caribbean” on WNJR Radio, 1430 AM. In 2003, he became part owner of the popular Caribbean Diaspora newspaper “Caribbean Impact”. He is currently the Vice President of the Guyana Cultural Association (GCA) and editor of its monthly online Guyana Folk Festival magazine. He wrote a weekly column on Real Estate, Business and Taxes in the Caribbean Impact newspaper for nine years and submitted weekly articles to the New York Edition of the Guyana Chronicle for 18 months. He wrote the Foreword in the 2014 publication of “The Church is one Foundation” by Handel Andrews; he was the editor of the 2015 publication of “The Resurrection” by Peter Halder; and submitted two articles in the 2016 publication of “The Legend” by Eusi Kwayana. He is the past President of the Flatbush Avenue Business Improvement District in Brooklyn, a position he held for 22 years. He is also an actor and movie script writer. The movie “In The Night” where he played a major role, was released in September 2019. Edgar is also involved in community and philanthropic activities in the Diaspora and is co-founder of the “Baronians and Friends” organization in New York. He is a former member of the Guyana Music Teachers’ Association. His greatest pleasure is teaching performing arts and music to kids at the Summer Workshop Series and at the Guyana Cultural & Arts Association of New York, where he is the music master. Over the years, the entrepreneur received numerous awards from various institutions.

Rediasporization: African-Guyanese Kweh-Kweh examines how African-Guyanese in New York City participate in the Come to My Kwe-Kwe ritual to facilitate rediasporization, that is, the creation of a newer diaspora from an existing one. Since the fall of 2005, African-Guyanese in New York City have celebrated Come to My Kwe-Kwe (more recently called Kwe-Kwe Night) on the Friday evening before Labor Day. Come to My Kwe-Kwe is a reenactment of a uniquely African-Guyanese pre-wedding ritual called kweh-kweh, and sometimes referred to as karkalay, mayan, kweh-keh, and pele. A typical traditional (wedding-based) kweh-kweh has approximately ten ritual segments, which include the pouring of libation to welcome or appease the ancestors; a procession from the groom’s residence to the bride’s residence or central kweh-kweh venue; the hiding of the bride; and the negotiation of bride price. Each ritual segment is executed with music and dance, which allow for commentary on conjugal matters, such as sex, domestication, submissiveness, and hard work. Come to My Kwe-Kwe replicates the overarching segments of the traditional kweh-kweh, but a couple (male and female) from the audience acts as the bride and groom, and props simulate the boundaries of the traditional performance space, such as the gate and the bride’s home. This book draws on more than a decade of ethnographic research data and demonstrates how Come to My Kwe-Kwe allows African-Guyanese-Americans to negotiate complex, overlapping identities in their new homeland, by combining elements from the past and present and reinterpreting them to facilitate rediasporization and ensure group survival.

From the late 1800s, African workers migrated to the mineral-rich hinterland areas of Guyana, mined gold, diamonds, and bauxite; diversified the country's economy; and contributed to national development. Utilizing real estate, financial, and death records, as well as oral accounts of the labor migrants along with colonial officials and mining companies' information stored in National Archives in Guyana, Great Britain, and the U.S. Library of Congress, the study situates miners into the historical structure of the country's economic development. It analyzes the workers attraction to mining from agriculture, their concepts of "order and progress," and how they shaped their lives in positive ways rather than becoming mere victims of colonialism. In this contentious plantation society plagued by adversarial relations between the economic elites and the laboring class, in addition to producing the strategically important bauxite for the aviation era of World Wars I & II, for almost a century the workers braved the ecologically hostile and sometimes deadly environments of the gold and diamond fields in the quest for El Dorado in Guyana.
