Book Description
Civil War veteran Cleve Trewe locks horns with a ruthless cattleman who’s hungry for land, thirsty for power—and out for blood . . . BLOOD IN SWEET RIVER After a long, hard journey west, Cleve Trewe is ready to settle down. He’s got his beautiful wife Berry in San Francisco, a baby on the way, and his sights set on a gorgeous piece of land in the Sierras. This sweet slice of heaven is aptly named Sweet River, and it’s the perfect place to build a ranch, farm, and home for his family. Problem is, Cleve’s not the only one with his eyes on the land. A big-time cattle baron named Asa Hawthorn is prepared to use threats, intimidation—and armed thugs—to get what he wants. Worse yet, Cleve knows the man from the darkest days of the Civil War . . . Cleve’s not about to surrender his claim.. He’s got his buddy Kanaway by his side, a family of Paiute Indians on his team, and the property papers ready to sign. That’s when the real trouble starts. To squash the deal, Hawthorn unleashes his deadliest henchmen—including a would-be gunfighter from Cleve’s past and a killer-for-hire who never misses. The Paiute family recognizes some of them as the men who slaughtered their tribe—a massacre that Cleve suspects was the work of Asa Hawthorn. Either way, a major battle is brewing. And the crystal blue waters of Sweet River are about to turn red . . .

Book Description
Mark St. Clair's life has fallen apart: he is diagnosed with incurable cancer just as his engineering career is taking off. Thinking that his life is over, he agrees to leave his wife and young daughter to undergo a radical new technology. Now, in a secret facility in Colorado, Mark is frozen alive in a controlled death, awaiting a cure for his brain cancer. He awakes to find a bioagent has wiped out most life-forms and the Complex facility is under the watchful eye of Rex, a supercomputer capable of imitating intelligent human behavior. The computer's algorithm calls for another person to be resuscitated every few days. As new people are revived, Rex tightens its grip, battling Mark for control of the operations and imposing even greater restrictions on the group. Mark and his allies feel trapped. Rex has killed before, and there's no stopping it now, since its devious developer has been resurrected. Now, in the wrong hands, Rex represents the greatest threat to human life. When Mark learns the true purpose of the Complex, he decides to escape the facility and take his chances on the outside. Each survivor must now take sides. Whom can Mark count on? Who will side with the AI? Desperation spurs the allies to leave the Complex, and they nearly succeed until events take an unexpected twist. What is really important in a world where AI has redefined life? This is a question that haunts Mark as he and his friends struggle to move forward in a barren world, as the frigid winter closes in. The stakes are nothing less than the future of humanity. If Mark can't outwit Rex, an entire civilization will vanish.

Excavation of the Iron Age, Roman and Medieval settlement at Gorhambury, St Albans
Author: David S Neal
Publisher: English Heritage
ISBN: 1848021461
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 263
Book Description
Gorhambury, just north of Verulamium, was the site of a substantial Roman villa complex which was excavated between 1972 and 1982 as part of a programme designed to test the interrelationships between villa sites in the Verulamium area and to examine trends in their growth, decline and prosperity. The villa was found to have grown out of a settlement belonging to the late Iron Age. A series of ditches of this phase enclosed an aisled barn, a nine-post granary and a circular house; these were the beginnings of a sequence of structures on the same spot which show increasing signs of Roman influence, all of which lay within the limits of the farmstead established at this early period. Timber buildings of the first half of the first century were followed around AD100, by a small but luxurious villa, rebuilt in the late second century, and thereafter in a gradual decline until its apparent abandonment around AD 350. Work on virtually the whole of the farmstead area has enabled a full sequence of plans of the main houses and all the ancillary structures - including barns, subsidiary housing and bath-houses - to be presented in the report. The catalogue of finds is an attempt to show the full range of material recovered from this working farmstead.
