Book Description
THE TROUBLE BEGAN ON GRANITE LEDGE FARM WHEN NATE BREWSTER WAS FOUND DEAD, face down on the ledge where the ladder fell from the barn roof with him on it. His wife, Patience, contends it was nothing more than an unfortunate accident. The authorities believe otherwise and charge her brother-in-law and her two nephews with murder. The court convicts only one man. But insurance investigator Benjamin B. Beach is more tenacious and he refuses to believe the conclusions. Beach is positive Nates fall was not an accident, the real killer was not identified, and Patience was covering up for her relatives in court. So the arrogant man attacks the vulnerable woman, fully expecting to extract the truth by grilling her for the facts. Drawing support from Cleve, an attentive neighbor whose wife has left him, and Molly, her devoted English setter and best friend, Patience resists her latest aggressor and defends her dysfunctional clan. Disguising shocking conflicts within the family, wily Patience duels with Beach. As the resilient woman skillfully manipulates her interrogator away from the truth, she reconsiders the familys hidden secrets and, choosing the high road, she escapes from her life of oppression in a way she never expected.

Book Description
An illuminating and entertaining history of the law’s treatment of animals Trespassing bees, murderous zebras, reasonable cows ... Ever since Biblical times, animals have been clashing with human laws. What to do with animals that injure or kill people, in particular, has long troubled humans. In medieval Europe, ‘killer’ animals – horses, cattle and most often pigs, which were notorious for eating young children – were put on trial. Even in the early twentieth century, circus elephants who lashed out at their keepers in America were summarily executed for their crimes. In Guilty Pigs, animal law experts Katy Barnett and Jeremy Gans guide readers through the philosophy and practice of animal-related law, from the very earliest cases to the issues we are debating today, including the responsibilities of pet owners and the application of human rights to animals. They also cover hunting rights, using animals to solve crime, protecting animals from abuse and neglect, and the unique nature of owning a living being. Filled with lively and sometimes bizarre case studies, this is a fascinating and entertaining read – for all lovers of misbehaving creatures. Katy Barnett is a professor of law at the University of Melbourne. She is the author of the young adult novel The Earth Below and co-author of Remedies in Australian Private Law. Jeremy Gans is a professor of law at the University of Melbourne. He is the author of Modern Criminal Law of Australia and The Ouija Board Jurors: Mystery, Mischief and Misery in the Jury System, a true crime book. He is a co-author of Uniform Evidence.

Book Description
After Dickens is both a performative reading of Dickens the novelist and an exploration of the potential for adaptive performance of the novels themselves. John Glavin conducts a historical inquiry into Dickens's relationship to the theatre and theatricality of his own time, and uncovers a much more ambivalent, often hostile, relationship than has hitherto been noticed. In this context, Dickens's novels can be seen as a form of counter-performance, one which would allow the author to perform without being seen or scrutinized. But Glavin also identifies a rich performative potential in Dickens's fiction, and describes new ways to stage that fiction in emotionally powerful, critically acute adaptations. The book as a whole, therefore, offers a reading of Dickens through an unusual alliance between literary criticism and theatrical performance.
