Dogs have coexisted with humans for more than 12,000 years; however, they do not always live up to their image as man's best friend. Every year approximately 4.5 million Americans are victims of dog bites. Patients presenting with dog bite injuries can have serious complications. Primary care and emergency department (E.D.) providers should be knowledgeable in appropriate treatment for dog bite injuries to provide the best patient outcomes. Evidence based research has lead to clinical guidelines for the management of soft-tissue wounds, tetanus immunization, rabies immunization, and appropriate antibiotic coverage. The purpose of this quantitative, descriptive study was to examine whether primary care and E.D. providers were assessing dog bite wounds appropriately, and following Infectious Disease Society of America (IDSA) guidelines for soft-tissue injuries and the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) guidelines for prevention of rabies and tetanus. One hundred medical charts from patients being seen by primary care and E.D. providers for dog bite injuries were reviewed using a data collection tool developed by the primary researcher. The findings showed two areas with particular nonadherence to the national guidelines for treating wounds which were irrigation, and administration of appropriate antibiotics. This study presents evidence for further examination of provider practices and treatment modalities for handling dog bite wounds.
