The growth of the Internet and the availability of powerful computers and hi- speed networks as low-cost commodity components are changing the way we do computing. These new technologies have enabled the clustering of a wide variety of geographically distributed resources, such as supercomputers, storage systems, data sources, and special devices and services, which can then be used as a uni?ed resource. Furthermore, they have enabled seamless access to and interaction among these distributed resources, services, applications, and data. The new paradigm that has evolved is popularly termed “Grid computing”. Grid computing and the utilization of the global Grid infrastructure have presented signi?cant challenges at all levels, including application development, progr- ming models, systems, infrastructures and services, networking, and security, and have led to the development of a global research community. Grid 2002 is the third in a series of workshops developed to provide a - rum for this growing Grid Computing research community. Grid 2000, the ?rst workshop in the series, was chaired by Rajkumar Buyya and Mark Baker, and was held in conjunction with HiPC 2002 in Bangalore, India. Grid 2001 (Chair: Craig A. Lee) and Grid 2002 were held in conjunction with Supercomputing, the world’s premier meeting for high-performance computing.

Welcome to GRID 2000, the first annual IEEE/ACM international workshop on grid computing sponsored by the IEEE Computer Society’s Task Force on Cluster Computing (TFCC) and the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). The workshop has received generous sponsorship from the European Grid Forum (eGrid), the EuroTools SIG on Metacomputing, Microsoft Research (USA), Sun Microsystems (USA), and the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (India). It is a sign of the current high levels of interest and activity in Grid computing that we have had contributions to the workshop from researchers and developers in Australia, Austria, Canada, France, Germany, Greece, India, Italy, Japan, Korea, The Netherlands, Spain, Switzerland, UK, and USA. It is our pleasure and honor to present the first annual international Grid computing meeting program and the proceedings. The Grid computing concept, which allows users to integrate administratively and g- graphically dispersed computing resources, has been gaining traction in a number of application areas during the past few years. By interconnecting many – heterogeneous, though usually virtualized – computing resources, virtual computer centers or superc- puters can be created, providing a seamless supply of computing resources. Grid comp- ing provides benefits not only for scientific computing (e.g., SETI@home, which interconnects one million computers across 226 countries with a total processing power of 711 TFLOPS) but also in a commercial environment. It is projected that computing Grids can lower the total IT costs of businesses by 30%. The report “Grid Computing: A Vertical Market Perspective 2005–2010” (by The Insight Research Corporation) estimates an increase of worldwide Grid spending from $714.9 million in 2005 to approximately $19.2 billion in 2010. One of the most prominent activities in academia is the EGEE project being funded with 30 MEuro by the European Commission. EGEE brings together researchers from over 27 countries with the common aim of developing a service Grid infrastructure, which is suited for scientific computing with very high demand for processing power.
