Book Description
As a follow-up to Green’s Discovery, this sequel, Green’s Discovery 2, Creating a Fair & Just Society, deals with the fact that the time has come for us to complete the work started in Green’s Discovery and for our world to establish a fair and just society, and subsequently to make first contact with another civilization. After more than a decade working with the ‘visitors’ Sydney Green had to face many challenges adapting to his role as the visitor’s ambassador, and having to deal with the special powers they gave him. After all of this time he knew that his participation in the process of transforming the world wasn’t complete as the visitors discussed with him that it was now time for the final steps to be implemented in order to prepare our world for the future. To Green’s surprise the visitors invite him into their environment so they could show him who and what they are. They knew they had to put things into perspective for Green so he would understand why they were paying so much attention to the little blue planet, and why they needed him to represent them. As well, and in response to one of Green’s questions, the visitors explain what the Big Bang Theory really was, and our place in the universe. To put it mildly Green is stunned by what he hears and experiences during that visit. This is the story of how the visitors work with Green, and many others, to help us make the necessary changes to our social, political, and economic paradigms, what those changes are, and how we take control of our future, and our world. This is the story of how we create a fair and just society for all humankind; and by doing so pave the way to meet with other more advanced worlds. And finally, this is the story of how we actually make first contact with another world, and what that experience is like.

Book Description
Across the world, ecosystems are for sale. ‘Green grabbing’ – the appropriation of land and resources for environmental ends – is an emerging process of deep and growing significance. A vigorous debate on ‘land grabbing’ already highlights instances where ‘green’ credentials are called upon to justify appropriations of land for food or fuel. Yet in other cases, environmental green agendas are the core drivers and goals of grabs. Green grabs may be drivn by biodiversity conservation, biocarbon sequestration, biofuels, ecosystem services or ecotourism, for example. In some cases theyse agendas involve the wholesale alienation of land, and in others the restructuring of rules and authority in the access, use and management of resources that may have profoundly alienating effects. Green grabbing builds on well-known histories of colonial and neo-colonial resource alienation in the name of the environment. Yet it involves novel forms of valuation, commodification and markets for pieces and aspects of nature, and an extraordinary new range of actors and alliances. This book draws together seventeen original cases from African, Asian and Latin American settings to ask: To what extent and in what ways do ‘green grabs’ constitute new forms of appropriation of nature? What political and discursive dynamics underpin ‘green grabs’? How and when do appropriations on the ground emerge out of circulations of green capital? What are the implications for ecologies, landscapes and livelihoods? Who is gaining and who is losing? How are agrarian social relations, rights and authority being restructured, and in whose interests? This book was published as a special issue of the Journal of Peasant Studies.

Book Description
Between 1700 and 1900, the subject of disinterment (exhumation) attracted the attention of antiquaries, who constructed a comprehensive memory of the past by 'reading' corpses as documents describing an idealised past. Between 1700 and 1900, the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries were stereotyped, idealised, and held as a standard by which the present time could be measured. Various figures in politics, academia, and the church pointed to historical persons such as Henry VIII, Shakespeare, Charles I, and Oliver Cromwell as icons whose lives, deaths and corpses illustrated the victories of English Protestantism, the values of Monarchism (or Republicanism), and the superiority of the English culture and its language. In particular, the subject of disinterment (exhumation) attracted the attention of antiquaries. They constructed a comprehensive memory of the past by 'reading' corpses as documents describing an idealised past. These 'texts' accompanied and enhanced the traditional texts of chronicle, literature, and epitaph. This study explores the cooperation of ideology and aesthetic, the paradox of allure and revulsion, and the uncanny attraction to death. In each case there is a desire for the dead to speak in a contemporary voice; each historical personage becomes symbolic of larger aspects of the contemporary culture. The discourse of the noble body in death is reconfigured to validate English nationalist ideals and to establish the past as a Golden Era of unimpeachable superiority. It was not enough simply to study the lives and deaths of historical figures. Itwas necessary to disinter the corpses, engage physically with the dead, and experience the discourse of validation. THEA TOMAINI is Associate Professor of English (Teaching) at the University of Southern California.
