Book Description
Science fiction goes green? Eric C. Otto explores literary science fiction's engagement with a central concern of our times: ecological degradation. Situated at the intersection of science fiction studies and environmental philosophy, Green Speculations: Science Fiction and Transformative Environmentalism highlights key works of environmental science fiction that critique various human values for their roles in instigating such degradation. The books receiving ecocritical treatment in Green Speculations include George R. Stewart's Earth Abides (1949), Frank Herbert's Dune (1965), Ursula K. Le Guin's The Word for World Is Forest (1972), Joan Slonczewski's A Door into Ocean (1986), Kim Stanley Robinson's Mars trilogy (1993, 1994, 1996), and Paolo Bacigalupi's The Windup Girl (2009). Otto reads these and other important science fiction novels as educative in their representations of environmental issues and the environmental philosophies that have emerged in response to them. Green Speculations demonstrates how environmental science fiction can be read not only as reflecting the ideas of environmental philosophies such as deep ecology, ecofeminism, and ecosocialism, but also as instrumental in thinking through the tenets of these philosophies. As such, the book places science fiction at the center of environmentalism and considers the genre to be an essential tool for prompting needed social and cultural transformation.

Book Description
This volume offers innovative ways to think about speculation at a time when anticipation of catastrophe in an apocalyptic mode is the order of the day and shapes public discourse on a global scale. It maps an interdisciplinary field of investigation: the chapters interrogate hegemonic ways of shaping the present through investments in the future, while also looking at speculative practices that reveal transformative potential. The twelve contributions explore concrete instances of envisioning the open unknown and affirmative speculative potentials in history, literature, comics, computer games, mold research, ecosystem science and artistic practice.

Book Description
The adventures of Mr Verdant Green, an Oxford freshman, is a wonderfully amusing and engaging account of a naïve university student, thrown into life amongst the hallowed halls of this famous institution. Upon the publication of its first part in 1853, this work quickly became something of a cult novel, and the second and third parts quickly followed. All three parts are published together in this volume. Widely regarded as a classic of its age, it evokes a sense of the work of Jerome K Jerome, or the kind of scenarios of which P G Wodehouse might have written, had the bent of Bertie Wooster been somewhat more academic. This work is also hugely complimented by the original illustrations of the author. A contemporary and friend of George Cruikshank and Leech, Bede's illustrations were widely regarded as being of the same calibre as both. From 1847 to 1855, his work was published in 'Punch Magazine', as well as 'The Month', and 'The Town and Country Miscellany'. John Betjeman paid tribute to Mr Verdant Green by using its illustrations ini 'An Old University Chest' (1938). Consistently the most popular of Cuthbert Bede's output, 'Mr Verdant Green' is a well-loved classic that is truly deserving of the name.

Through these discussions, the book explores the potential of speculation in addressing issues such as climate change, urban futures and new political practices.

Book Description
An examination of how Western visions of endless future growth have contributed to the global environmental crisis For centuries, the West has produced stories about the future in which humans use advanced science and technology to transform the earth. Michael Rawson uses a wide range of works that include Francis Bacon’s New Atlantis, the science fiction novels of Jules Verne, and even the speculations of think tanks like the RAND Corporation to reveal the environmental paradox at the heart of these narratives: the single-minded expectation of unlimited growth on a finite planet. Rawson shows how these stories, which have long pervaded Western dreams about the future, have helped to enable an unprecedentedly abundant and technology-driven lifestyle for some while bringing the threat of environmental disaster to all. Adapting to ecological realities, he argues, hinges on the ability to create new visions of tomorrow that decouple growth from the idea of progress.
