Book Description
Grandmama and the Church of the People Inspired by Psalm 78 v. 1-4, this engaging series of lesson-laden vignettes, set in a fictitious, small-town, Negro church in South Carolina over the course of 20 years between 1945 and 1965, serves as a pretext for Grandmama to teach her passel of unnamed grandchildren about the curious ways of the "Good Lord God"...Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Through the telling of her stories, Grandmama unfurls fables about the forms and fashions as well as the fun foibles of faith fellowship at The Church of the People, and shows us all that in our human-ness, we will surely fall short of God's perfect ways sometimes, even Grandmama, her own self. The stories are related in the conversational Ebonics of that era. Grandmama is a woman with a formal education that only reached sixth grade, yet she has the Master's degree in Christian life learning, as taught by the Holy Spirit. Most of the stories are light and some are "fall out" funny, but others tackle subjects that challenge Christian communities to eschew the worship of denominations, individual churches or charismatic leaders in favor of a real personal relationship with God, the Holy Father of all Creation...God, the Son, who sacrificed everything for the undeserving...and God, the Person of Holy Spirit, who walks and talks with us through the signposts of life, and who can get His feelings hurt when we disobey, in the name of God.

Book Description
In a conversation about his teaching and preaching style, Michael Curry notes with a laugh that hymns and songs of faith were always a part of the mix. “I learned what I believed in the songs I heard my family—especially my grandmother—sing. We sang our faith every day.” Out of that strong foundation, Bishop Curry shares the music of his childhood—the songs that have grown with him to shape an adult and vibrant faith.

Book Description
***Shortlisted for the 2023 Michael Ramsey Prize*** What does it mean when God is presented as male? What does it mean when - from our internal assumptions to our shared cultural imaginings - God is presented as white? These are the urgent questions Chine McDonald asks in a searing look at her experience of being a Black woman in the white-majority space that is the UK church - a church that is being abandoned by Black women no longer able to grin and bear its casual racism, colonialist narratives and lack of urgency on issues of racial justice. Part memoir, part social and theological commentary, God Is Not a White Man is a must-read for anyone troubled by a culture that insists everyone is equal in God's sight, yet fails to confront white supremacy; a lament about the state of race and faith, and a clarion call for us all to do better. 'This book is much-needed medicine for a sickness that we cannot ignore.' - The Most Rev. Michael B. Curry

Book Description
What if the most steadfast faith you'll ever encounter comes from a Black grandmother? The church mothers who raised Yolanda Pierce, dean of Howard University School of Divinity, were busily focused on her survival. In a world hostile to Black women's bodies and spirits, they had to be. Born on a former cotton plantation and having fled the terrors of the South, Pierce's grandmother raised her in the faith inherited from those who were enslaved. Now, in the pages of In My Grandmother's House, Pierce reckons with that tradition, building an everyday womanist theology rooted in liberating scriptures, experiences in the Black church, and truths from Black women's lives. Pierce tells stories that center the experiences of those living on the underside of history, teasing out the tensions of race, spirituality, trauma, freedom, resistance, and memory. A grandmother's theology carries wisdom strong enough for future generations. The Divine has been showing up at the kitchen tables of Black women for a long time. It's time to get to know that God.

Book Description
This book examines the complex relationship between religion and business in twentieth-century America. It is the story of how Christianity’s most basic institution, the local church, wrestled with the challenges and compromises of competing in the modern marketplace through adopting the advertising, public relations, and marketing methods of business. It follows these sacred promoters, and their critics, as they navigated between divinely inspired and consumer demanded. Amid an animated and contentious battleground for principles, practices and parishioners, John C. Hardin explores the landscape of selling religion in America and its evolution over the twentieth century.

Once you open the pages of my journal, you will step into the most exciting summerI will never forget it, and I doubt you will either. Never in my wildest dreams did I think things would turn out the way they did, but wow, what a great summer. If you are an inventor like me, it helps to be smart, but it really helps to have a genius for a grandfather. Most kids our age only dream of flying over their neighborhood five hundred feet in the air, but I did it. My first landing was not so good, but my last one made me the hometown hero. I also learned that summer the value of standing up for yourself and being a loyal friend. To say I had a couple of near death experiences would be an understatement, but in the end I lived to see the sixth grade. Did I mention that my best friend was a girl?
