Book Description
Excerpt from New Grammar School Arithmetic, Vol. 2 The New Grammar School Arithmetic forms with the New Primary Arithmetic a complete course in elementary school mathematics. Each of the first four chapters of the New Grammar School Arithmetic provides for a half year, beginning with advanced matter, which is followed by a review and an extension of the topics of the preceding grades. Each of the next two chapters (v and VI) contains arithmetic work for a year, which should be supplemented by portions of the algebraic and geometrical material of Chapters VII and VIII. It is recommended that at least a portion of the work in equations of Chapter VII should precede the study of Chapter V. Among the special features of the New Grammar School Arithmetic are the number and the variety of the problems; the systematic reviews, which cover oral and written drill work even in the fundamental Operations; the attention paid to short, direct, business methods of computation; and the spiral handling of the various topics. Book Description
Excerpt from Grammar School Arithmetic, Vol. 2: Extending Over the Course of Graded Grammar School Work This book has been prepared for the pupils of our common schools with two special objects in view: to train the mind of the child to acquire facility and accuracy in the fundamental use of number, in both oral and written work, in an orderly and natural way; and to prepare him for the business of daily life. The author has also had in view the needs of the many children who are compelled to leave school at an early age and who have no time to spend in learning the definitions and theories of arithmetic, but who need a great deal of practice in the essentials of the subject. The problems have been constructed with special reference to utility and business needs, and they are written in definite arithmetical language within the comprehension of the child. An important feature is the arrangement of the lessons, each of which consists of fifteen concrete problems five mental and ten written. The five mental problems are similar in appearance and process of solution to the ten written problems which follow, and are to be used as an introductory lesson. Teachers will at once note the peculiar advantage of a book in which mental and written work are combined in the same lesson. It furnishes matter which hitherto they have been obliged to find elsewhere or entirely neglect. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Grammar-School Arithmetic, Vol. 2: Including Easy Algebraic Equations and Simple Geometrical Problems Part II., intended for pupils of the fifth and sixth school years, gives a sufficiently full treatment of common and decimal fractions, and of com pound numbers, and takes up the simpler and more practical parts of per centage and interest. Part III. Completes the ordinary grammar-school course in arithmetic, and contains, besides, two chapters on algebraic equations and one on elementary constructive geometry, with applications. The first algebra chapter should be taken up with the seventh year's work in percentage and interest. The remaining one, Chapter XV., may be profitably studied where there is time to continue this subject. Although placed at the end of the book, it is intended that suitable portions of the geometry work of Chapter XVI. Be taught from time to time during the last two years of the grammar school. The special features of the work are its division of the arithmetical portion into half-yearly chapters, instead of the ordinary arrangement by topics; the omission, as far as possible, of rules and definitions; the very great number and variety of the examples; the use of the equation in the solution of arithmetical problems, especially in those of percentage and interest; and the introduction of the elements of algebra and geometry. Book Description
Originally published in 1976, this title is an edited volume and reflects the major approaches being taken in structural learning at the time. Chapter 1 deals with the basic question of whether competence (knowledge) should be characterized in terms of rules (automata), on the one hand, or associations on the other. The bulk of Chapter 2 is devoted to a series of earlier experiments on rule learning by the editor and his associates. The two contributions in Chapter 3 deal with graph theoretical models. Piagetian models constitute the subject of Chapter 4. Chapter 5 deals with attempts to stimulate human behaviour with a computer. Chapter 6 ranges over a wide variety of competence models, with particular reference to logic and mathematics. In Chapter 7 the editor proposes a new theory of structural learning, together with some empirical results.

Book Description
The book presents the history of ICMI trough a prosopographical approach. In other words, it pays a lot of attention to the actors of the International movement. The portraits of the members of the ICMI Central Committees (1908-1936) and ICMI Executive Committees (1952-2008), and other eminent figures in ICMI history, who have passed away in the first 100 years of its life, are the guiding thread of the volume. Each portrait includes: · Biographical information · An outline of the various contributions made by the individual in question to the study of problems pertaining to mathematics teaching/education · Primary bibliography · Secondary with particular attention to the publications concerning the teaching of mathematics · Images: photos, book frontispieces, relevant manuscripts The authors of the portraits (30 altogether) are researchers in the history of mathematics, mathematics, and mathematics education. The focus on the officer’s role within ICMI and on his/her contributions to mathematics education, make the portraits different from usual biographies. In particular, since most officers were active mathematicians, the portraits shed light on aspects of their lesser-known activity. Connecting chapters place the action of these figures in the historical context and in the different phases of ICMI history.
