Excerpt from Gradual Lessons in Grammar, or Guide to the Construction of the English Language The pupil should first construct a simple sentence, consisting only of a subject and predicate; then introduce the several classes of limiting words, one at a time, till he is familiar with all, and with their relations to the words they limit. Next, let him construct compound sentences, till the connection or dependence of clauses is rightly understood, with their limiting or modifying power. Thus, he will become acquainted with the fact, unencumbered by technical terms. In the 19th century, education became accessible to much wider circles of society in a great number and variety of schools and the teaching of grammar came to be obligatory from 1870/72 with the advent of general education. Whereas these general trends of the 19th century are well-known to scholars working in different disciplines of social history, and the history of education in particular, it is still true that major sections of the evidence are largely uncollected. This is especially so for school books: there is virtually a gap between the 18th century and the present grammatical tradition. This bibliography lists some 1930 works on English grammar published in the 19th century, mainly in Britain and the US, half of which are accompanied by short descriptions of their physical make-up, content and affiliation.

A thorough examination of Ojibway Indian history, culture, traditions, and beliefs, by a chief who had one foot in the life of his tribe and the other in the white world. Includes discussions of Indian writing and language, along with illustrations depicting various symbols used in picture writing. Copway offers one of the earliest arguments for Indian reservations. George Copway (1818-ca.1863), was an Ojibwa Indian chief, educated in Illinois, who produced important translations into the Chippewa language. He lived and worked mostly in Michigan, but was also connected with the New York press, and he toured and lectured widely in Europe.
