Book Description
Excerpt from Graded Problems in Arithmetic and Mensuration Whatever text-book on arithmetic is used, the necessity for a work of this kind is felt by every teacher, from the fact that fresh problems stimulate investigation, while a review of those that have been in use for a term often fails to produce results proportionate to the expenditure of time. About 3500 examples are here furnished, graded on the plan of the New American Arithmetics, yet in such manner that the book will readily supplement any other series. To make the work complete in itself, all the necessary rules and tables have been added, together with a number of questions on the principles of arithmetic and mensuration, for reviews and examinations. It is believed that pupils who master the problems here presented will find no difficulty in solving any fair question in arithmetic. The rearrangement of the present edition of the Graded Problems into Parts I. and II. is to permit the publication of the parts separately, and is in accordance with the suggestions of a number of prominent teachers. New problems have been added, as follows: Part I., pages 46, 47, 48, 49, 84, 85, 86, 87, 88; Part II., pages 8, 65, 66, 67, 68. The Questions, Rules, and Tables have been transferred to their appropriate places, but in all other respects the same order of arrangement has been observed as heretofore. Book Description
Excerpt from Graded Work in Arithmetic The book begins with a thorough review of the work Of the preceding years, the principles already developed being applied to problems of greater difficulty. The chapter on denominate numbers lays particular stress on circular measure, and on longitude and time. Practical mensuration is completed. The treatment Of percentage and its applications - commission, trade dis count, taxes, insurance, and interest - is continued and extended. The subjects introduced for the first time in this book are duties or customs, commercial forms, bank discount, exchange, and simple and compound proportion. Under areas and volumes is included a discussion Of areas Of prisms, cylinders, pyramids, and cones, and of volumes Of cones and pyramids. As in the preceding books, the method Of treatment is largely inductive. By means of illustrations and care fully graded questions the pupil is led to see the reason for the various processes, and is encouraged to formulate his own methods Of operation.
