Book Description
The aim of the present work is to develop an approach for detecting and mapping different types of subsurface anomalous zones using tomographic processing techniques. Tomography is applied to process seismic refraction and Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) data. We developed a new tomography technique depending on acquiring the GPR or seismic data from surface survey, where both sources and receivers are located on the earth s surface. Three synthetic seismic models and two sets of field data are discussed to test the proposed seismic refraction tomography technique. Due to the similarities between GPR and seismic data, the adopted tomography technique is applied to GPR data. Three GPR tomography laboratory experiments are acquired in the laboratory of Kiel University, Germany. The inversion of GPR data using the adopted technique give satisfactory results on the lateral extension of the anomalies as well as GPR velocity. One GPR tomography field test is acquired in the botanic garden of Kiel University, Kiel, Germany. In this data the root system of a tree and zone of high water content, due to previous excavation processes could be marked on the inverted tomogram map.

Book Description
The research work on the topic of ‘‘Tomography of the Earth’s Crust: From Geophysical Sounding to Real-Time Monitoring’’ has focused on the development of cross-scale multiparameter methods and their technological application together with the development of innovative field techniques. Seismic wave field inversion theory, diffusion and potential methods were developed and optimized with respect to cost and benefit aspects. This volume summarizes the scientific results of nine interdisciplinary joint projects funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research in the framework of the Research and Development Program GEOTECHNOLOGIEN. Highlights and innovations presented cover many length scales and involve targets ranging from applications in the laboratory, to ground water surveys of heterogeneous aquifer, geotechnical applications like tunnel excavation, coal mine and CO2 monitoring and the imaging and monitoring of tectonic and societally relevant objects as active faults and volcanoes. To study these objects, the authors use the full spectrum of geophysical methods (ultrasonics, seismic and seismology, electromagnetics, gravity, and airborne) in combination with new methods like seismic interferometry, diffuse wave field theory and full-wave-form inversion in 3D and partially also in 4D. Book Description
This ground-breaking work is the first to cover the fundamentals of hydrogeophysics from both the hydrogeological and geophysical perspectives. Authored by leading experts and expert groups, the book starts out by explaining the fundamentals of hydrological characterization, with focus on hydrological data acquisition and measurement analysis as well as geostatistical approaches. The fundamentals of geophysical characterization are then at length, including the geophysical techniques that are often used for hydrogeological characterization. Unlike other books, the geophysical methods and petrophysical discussions presented here emphasize the theory, assumptions, approaches, and interpretations that are particularly important for hydrogeological applications. A series of hydrogeophysical case studies illustrate hydrogeophysical approaches for mapping hydrological units, estimation of hydrogeological parameters, and monitoring of hydrogeological processes. Finally, the book concludes with hydrogeophysical frontiers, i.e. on emerging technologies and stochastic hydrogeophysical inversion approaches.

Book Description
Seismic first-arrival tomography is a technique currently experiencing a renaissance in popularity due to the simplicity of implementation and promising results for delineating a variety of subsurface targets. The purpose of this study is to investigate seismic first-arrival tomography in a variety of settings and applications, and thus to provide a solid framework for future work. The study largely consists of two separate themes, hydrogeophysics and low-velocity anomaly detection. Hydrogeophysics is an emerging field whereby measured geophysical properties are used as proxies for physical properties of the subsurface. This study represents one of the first high-resolution hydrogeophysical investigations in the upper three meters of the subsurface using seismic first-arrival tomography, and consists of detecting shallow high-velocity zones that are interpreted to be perched water bodies on the basis of geophysical and hydrologic evidence. The delineation and imaging of the perched water bodies is further advanced using trend-analysis techniques. A second theme of this dissertation is the optimization of methods for delineating low-velocity anomalies at depth using seismic first-arrival tomography. In order to locate a low-velocity zone at Oak Ridge, Tennessee, multiple seismic lines were collected and correlated with site-wide geology. The integration of geologic and geophysical data-sets assisted in developing a comprehensive transport conceptual model, and provided a predictive framework for future geophysical investigations at Oak Ridge. As a second component of this theme, a systematic methodology for detecting and delineating shallow low-velocity zones is developed.

Book Description
Methods to eonstruet images of an objeet from "projeetions" of x-rays, ultrasound or eleetromagnetie waves have found wide applieations in eleetron mieroseopy, diagnostie medicine and radio astronomy. Projeetions are measurable quantities that are a funetiona- usually involving a line integral - of physieal properties of an objeet. Convolutional methods, or iterative algorithms to solve large systems of linear equations are used to reeonstruet the objeet. In prineiple, there is no reasan why similar image reeonstruetions ean not be made with seismie waves. In praetiee, seismic tomography meets with a number of diffieulties, and it is not until the last deeade that imaging of transmitted seismie waves has found applicatian in the Earth sciences. The most important differenee between global seismie tomography and mare eonventional applieations in the laboratory is the faet that the seismologist is eonfronted with the lack of anything resembling a well-eontrolled experimental set-up. Apart from a few nuelear tests, it is not in our power to locate or time seismie events. Apart from a few seabattom seismographs, our sensors are located on land -and even there the availability of data depends on eultural and politieal factors. Even in exploratian seismics, praetieal faetors such as the east of an experiment put strong limitations on the eompleteness of the data set.
