Book Description
America, beginning as a small group of devout Puritan settlers, ultimately became the richest, most powerful Empire in the history of the world, but having reached that point, is now in a process of implosion and decay. This book, inspired by Frankfurt School Critical Theory, especially Erich Fromm, offers a unique historical, cultural and characterological analysis of American national character and its underlying psychodynamics. Specifically, this analysis looks at the persistence of Puritan religion, as well as the extolling of male toughness and America's unbridled pursuit of wealth. Finally, its self image of divinely blessed exceptionalism has fostered vast costs in lives and wealth. But these qualities of its national character are now fostering both a decline of its power and a transformation of its underlying social character. This suggests that the result will be a changing social character that enables a more democratic, tolerant and inclusive society, one that will enable socialism, genuine, participatory democracy and a humanist framework of meaning. This book is relevant to understanding America’s past, present and future.

Book Description
Congress declared in 1864 that it could never accept a foreign monarchy in Mexico. Upon the signing of the surrender at Appomattox Courthouse by 1865, General Ulysses S. Grant freed up over 50,000 men to send to the Texas-Mexico border under the command of Philip Sheridan. In addition, many local organizations called Monroe Doctrine Societies had organized to raise volunteers, weapons, and supplies to support the Mexican Army. One group, the American Legion of Honor, was commissioned by the Mexican president, and played an active role in support of the Mexican forces fighting the French invaders. Members of the US Colored Troops also accepted discharges at the end of the Civil War and aided Mexico in the conflict. Finally, Matías Romero, Mexico's tireless ambassador to the United States, raised money from US investors through Mexican bonds. Those funds financed the purchase of advanced artillery and repeating rifles. The addition of veteran ex-Union officers to the Mexican forces helped turn the ragtag guerrilla bands of the Mexican resistance into an organized military. They handily defeated the French imperial army at Querétaro, captured the Emperor, retook Mexico City, and restored the Republic.

Book Description
CHASING THE COBRA recreates the early 19th Century Mediterranean where Barbary pirates prowl free, seizing merchant ships, enslaving their crews and collecting ransom. Especially notorious is Haddim, The Indestructible, an elusive renegade known for his cunning and brutality. It took the fledgling American Navy two campaigns to secure peace in the Med, one before and one after the War of 1812. During both campaigns, Captain Jonathon Coyne is in the midst of the action. Complicating his life is the Contessa Luisa Cortolini, a sophisticate of extraordinary beauty and charm whom he meets at a reception in Siracusa. She lures him into a passionate affair, but he soon discovers that his is not the only heart she fancies. Between fierce battles at sea and duplicity in love, Coyne is tested over and over on land and sea.

Book Description
They were warriors, trained to fight, dedicated to their country, and determined to win. At Guadalcanal, the Marine Corps’ machine gunners took everything the Japanese could throw at them in one of the bloodiest battles of World War II; their position was so hopeless that at one point they were given the go-ahead to surrender. Near the Chosin Reservoir in Korea, as the mercury dropped to twenty below, the 1st Marine Division found itself surrounded and cut off by the enemy. The outlook seemed so bleak that many in Washington had privately written off the men. But surrender is not part of a Marine’s vocabulary. Gunner’s Glory contains true stories of these and other tough battles in the Pacific, in Korea, and in Vietnam, recounted by the machine gunners who fought them. Bloody, wounded, sometimes barely alive, they stayed with their guns, delivering a stream of firepower that often turned defeat into victory–and always made them the enemy’s first target.
