Book Description
This work proposes a combined and accurate simulation of wireless channel, physical layer and networking aspects in order to bridge the gaps between the corresponding research communities. The resulting high fidelity simulations enable performance optimizations across multiple layers, and are used in the second part of this thesis to evaluate the impact of fast-fading channel characteristics on Carrier-Sense Multiple Access, and to quantify the benefit of successive interference cancellation.

Book Description
This book is designed for advanced undergraduate and graduate students in high energy heavy-ion physics. It is relevant for students who will work on topics being explored at RHIC and the LHC. In the first part, the basic principles of these studies are covered including kinematics, cross sections (including the quark model and parton distribution functions), the geometry of nuclear collisions, thermodynamics, hydrodynamics and relevant aspects of lattice gauge theory at finite temperature. The second part covers some more specific probes of heavy-ion collisions at these energies: high mass thermal dileptons, quarkonium and hadronization. The second part also serves as extended examples of concepts learned in the previous part. Both parts contain examples in the text as well as exercises at the end of each chapter. - Designed for students and newcomers to the field- Focuses on hard probes and QCD- Covers all aspects of high energy heavy-ion physics- Includes worked example problems and exercises

Book Description
The interaction of particles and photons with solid surfaces is interdisci plinary in character, so that very recent developments in solid-state phys ics, surface physics and atomic physics stimulate progress in the field or profit from results of the "ion-solid" community. Technical interest in the field ranges from catalysis and semiconductor manufacturing to fusion re search, for instance by surface analytical techniques, or interest in phenom ena such as sputtering and radiation damage. The Third International Workshop on Inelastic Ion-Surface Coll isions, held at Feldkirchen-Westerham under the auspices of Max-Planck-Institut fUr Plasmaphysik, Garching, Fed. Rep. of Germany, brought together 63 scientists from 12 countries for three days of very involved discussions. As at the pre vious workshops at Bell Laboratories in 1976 and McMaster University in 1978, the experiment of gathering experts from seemingly different disciplines was very successful in promoting the basic physical ideas. The proceedings contain the 14 major reviews and a smaller number of con tributions presented at the workshop. All papers have been reviewed with little delay, and the reviewer's efforts are gratefully acknowledged. The first group of papers is concerned with theoretical and experimental aspects of secondary electron emission due to ion impact, including the potential emission caused by slow metastables. This is followed by reviews of exper iments and recent theoretical developments of electron- and photon-induced desorption.

Book Description
Commencing with a self-contained overview of atomic collision theory, this monograph presents recent developments of R-matrix theory and its applications to a wide-range of atomic molecular and optical processes. These developments include the electron and photon collisions with atoms, ions and molecules which are required in the analysis of laboratory and astrophysical plasmas, multiphoton processes required in the analysis of superintense laser interactions with atoms and molecules and positron collisions with atoms and molecules required in antimatter studies of scientific and technologial importance. Basic mathematical results and general and widely used R-matrix computer programs are summarized in the appendices.

Book Description
The safe and secure operation ofcomputer systems continues to be the major issue in many applications where there is a threat to people, the environment, investment or goodwill. Such applications include medical devices, railway signalling, energy distribution, vehicle control and monitoring, air traffic control, industrial process control, telecommunications systemsand manyothers. This book represents the proceedings of the 16th International Conference on Computer Safety, Reliability and Security, held in York, UK, 7-10 September 1997. The conference reviews the state ofthe art, experience and new trends in the areas of computer safety, reliability and security. It forms a platform for technology transfer between academia, industry and research institutions. In an expanding world-wide market for safe, secure and reliable computer systems SAFECOMP 97 provides an opportunity for technical developers, users and legislators to exchange and review the experience, to consider the best technologies now available and to identify the skills and technologies required for the future. The papers were carefully selected by the Conference International Programme Committee. The authors of the papers come from twelve different countries. The subjects covered include safe software, safety cases, management & development, security, human factors, guidelines standards & certification, applications & industrial experience, formal methods & models andvalidation, verification and testing. SAFECOMP '97 continues the successful series of SAFECOMP conferences first held in 1979 in Stuttgart. SAFECOMP is organised by the European Workshop on Industrial Computer Systems, Technical Committee 7 on Safety, Security and Reliability (EWICS TC7).
