Wenn wir denselben mit kritischem Blick durchmustern, ist es zweifellos, dass mit dem Eindringen des Christentums in die romische Lit teratar zur Zeit Hadrians der Wendepunkt derselben gegeben ist; denn mit dem Christentum zieht eine ganz neue Welt von Ideen, die mit der Nationalitat brechen, in das romische Schrifttum ein. Die Quellen berichten uns nur einige Massregelungen und diese betrafen unter geordnete Personlichkeiten. Der Rhetor Carrinas Secundus wurde wegen einer Deklamation uber das altherkommliche, abgedroschene Thema "gegen die Tyrannen verbannt; einen Atellanendichter' liess er wegen eines zwei deutigen Scherzes mitten auf der Buhne verbrennen. Merkwurdig ist, dass auch dieser schreckliche Mensch der Litteratur seinen Tribut dar bringen musste. Er schrieb zwar keine Schriften, allein er geizte nach dem Ruhme des Redners; und hier konnte er ausserordentlich eifersuchtig werden. Eine schone Rede, die einmal Senecs im Senat und vor dem Kaiser gehalten hatte, hatte dem Philosophen fast das Leben gekostet. Ubrigens hatte er es wirklich als Redner zu einiger Volkommenheit ge bracht; besonders in der Erregung flossen ihm die Worte leicht, auch seine Stimme gewann Modulation und Kraft unter der Herrschaft des Affektes. Zierlichkeit des Stils war dieser rohen Natur durchaus verhasst, er verachtete darum den Modeschriftsteller jener Tage, Senecs; der schreibe.
