Protest Song in East and West Germany Since the 1960s
Author: David Robb
Publisher: Camden House
ISBN: 9781571132819
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 332
Book Description
The German protest song from the 1960s through the 1990s and how it carried forth traditions of earlier periods. The modern German political song is a hybrid of high and low culture. With its roots in the birth of mass culture in the 1920s, it employs communicative strategies of popular song. Yet its tendencies toward philosophical, poetic, and musical sophistication reveal intellectual aspirations. This volume looks at the influence of revolutionary artistic traditions in the lyrics and music of the Liedermacher of east and west Germany: the rediscovery of the revolutionary songs of 1848 by the 1960s West German folk revival, the use of the profane "carnivalesque" street-ballad tradition by Wolf Biermann and the GDR duo Wenzel & Mensching, the influence of 1920s artistic experimentation on Liedermacher such as Konstantin Wecker, and the legacy of Hanns Eisler's revolutionary song theory. The book also provides an insider perspective on the countercultural scenes of the two Germanys, examining the conditions in which political songs were written and performed. In view of the decline of the political song form since the fall of communism, the book ends with a look at German avant-garde techno's attempt to create a music that challenges conventional cultural perceptions and attitudes. Contributors: David Robb, Eckard Holler, Annette Blühdorn, Peter Thompson David Robb is Senior Lecturer in German Studies at the Queen's University of Belfast.

Book Description
Cultivated in East Kentucky and North Carolina for over 100 years, the two finger picking style has almost been forgotten. Few "old timer" players have mastered this style but fortunately some committed players like Art Rosenbaum and Mike Seeger have preserved this heritage and kept the style present. And now in three installments, Sebastian Schroeder will introduce you to this interesting style. In this second 2-finger book the focus will be on Thumb Lead Style. Here the melody tones are plucked by the thumb, while the first and fifth string is played by thumb or index finger as drone strings. The tones of the lower strings of the banjo are easier when played in the Thumb Lead Style. So this add a nice contrast when accompanying singing or other instruments. Therefore this is also a good style for ballads. This book includes 48 pages for banjo beginners and advanced players, 48 downloadable audio examples and tablature for all exercises and songs.Songlist:Boil Them Cabbage DownFly Around My Pretty Little MissDrunken SailorWorried Man BluesWill The Circle Be UnbrokenShady GrovePretty PollySpotted PonyJack O ́Diamonds (Drunken Hicups)Darling CoreyReuben ́s Train

Perspectives on German Popular Music
Author: Michael Ahlers
Publisher: Taylor & Francis
ISBN: 1317081730
Category : Music
Languages : en
Pages : 339
Book Description
In this book, native popular musicologists focus on their own popular music cultures from Germany, Austria and Switzerland for the first time: from subcultural to mainstream phenomena; from the 1950s to contemporary acts. Starting with an introduction and two chapters on the histories of German popular music and its study, the volume then concentrates on focused, detailed and yet concise close readings from different perspectives (including particular historical East and West German perspectives), mostly focusing on the music and its protagonists. Moreover, these analyses deal with very original specific genres such as Schlager and Krautrock as well as transcultural genres such as Punk or Hip Hop. There are additional chapters on characteristically German developments within music media, journalism and the music industry. The book will contribute to a better understanding of German, Austrian and Swiss popular music, and will interconnect international and especially Anglo-American studies with German approaches. The book, as a consequence, will show close connections between global and local popular music cultures and diverse traditions of study.

Central European Folk Music
Author: Philip V. Bohlman
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1136508066
Category : Music
Languages : en
Pages : 342
Book Description
This is the first annotated bibliography, in German or English, to gather the rich sources for German-language folk-music scholarship. It presents a comprehensive view of both historical and contemporary trends in a field embracing folkloristics and ethnomusicology, as well as philological and cultural studies. Beginning with early theories of folk song-formulated by Herder, Goethe, the Brothers Grimm, and others-the book examines the most important collections of the 19th-century folk-song movement, and surveys the 20th-century institutions and publications that have made folk-music scholarship essential to an understanding of German-speaking Europe. The book represents the enormous diversity of folk music. Ideas of genre and classification contrast with the ways in which minority and ethnic groups have contributed to the complex constructs of 19th- and 20th-century nationalism. The intellectual history in this book often takes the form of a clash between institutions and the forceful personalities of scholars who theorized that folk music was the product of individuals or the linguistic core of nations. Entries that illustrate the ways in which constructs of folk music have contributed to the politics of culture (e.g., in Nazi Germany or in the workers' culture of the former German Democratic Republic) also constitute the expansive musical landscape covered by this book The author includes diverse disciplinary perspectives, not just those of folklorists, but also concepts from ethnomusicology, historical musicology, and religious and cultural studies. In addition to traditional studies of the canons of German folk music (e.g., ballads and singing-society repertories), Bohlman includes studies of religious and ethnic minorities, and of German folk music in nations and regions outside Central Europe. The comprehensive nature of this book, not only makes available a rich history of scholarship, but also contextualizes Central European folk music as a vital and critical discipline for the interpretation of a changing Europe. Includes index.
