Book Description
Geosynclines is devoted to the geosynclines concept, which states that the most elevated parts of the earth's crust—the mountains—had risen by a gigantic inversion of relief from the more depressed regions where they had originated. This book re-examines the concept in light of further geological evidence. The book is organized into four parts. Part I presents a detailed account of the birth and development of the geosynclinal concept. It shows that only the European (Alpine) concept of the geosyncline involves a fundamental palaeogeographical differentiation of mountain chains, and that it is from this standpoint that the American concept must be considered if it is to be placed in a more general framework. Part II attempts to define the geosynclinal concept in the Alpine sense of the term: i.e., in the light of current views on the Mediterranean chains of the Alpine cycle, which are the best documented. Part III collates the information acquired on the various aspects of geosynclines as exemplified by the Mediterranean chains of the Alpine cycle. Part IV discusses the degree to which the ""Alpine"" concept of the geosyncline may be extended in time.

Physical Geography: Introduction To Earth
Author: K. Bharatdwaj
Publisher: Discovery Publishing House
ISBN: 9788183561631
Category : Physical geography
Languages : en
Pages : 354
Book Description
It may well be said that there can be no geography which concerns itself with the actual shape and form of the land surface, solid rode, the configuration and extent of the seas and oceans, the enveloping atmosphere without which life as we know it cannot exist, the physical process which take place in that atmosphere. This book has been designed to cover the syllabus of physical geography required for the B.A. Students of the Indian Universities. The subject matter has been arranged so as to provide clear and integrated approach to the subject with all essential tools of applicable geography for B.A. curriculum. Care has been taken to make the treatment of the subject simple and accessible to the average students. It is believed that the book in present form will be found to be useful by the student community and the teaching fraternity alike. Suggestion for the improvement of the book will always be most welcome. Contents: Origin of the Earth, Structure of the Earth s Interior and Lithosphere, Continents and Ocean Basins, Earth s Movements and Age, Plateau and Mountain Building, Rocks and Earthquakes, Vulcanicity and Volcanoes.

Global Education Tectonics of the Expanding Earth
Author: I︠U︡riĭ Vitalʹevich Chudinov
Publisher: VSP
ISBN: 9789067642804
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 216
Book Description
This book is a new approach in the development of global tectonics. It deals with a new variant of the Earth's expansion concept: the model of 'eduction', i.e. of lifting up the mantel material onto the Earth's surface in the active margins of oceans and non-closed character of the mantle currents. The author developed a thorough and comprehensive scientific scenario of tectonic evolution of the Earth using the idea of its radius increase. The most significant and interesting part of the book is a critical analysis of the history of development of plate tectonics. Another remarkable part of the book is the explanation of existing seismicity --- its specific and geographical distribution from the point of view of tectonic evolution of the lithosphere. This book should serve as a trigger for a critical review of contemporary tectonic concepts.
