Book Description
Excerpt from Geometry and Faith: A Fragmentary Supplement to the Ninth Bridgewater Treatise The universe, actual, possible and impossible, is composed of four elements, Spirit, matter, Space, and time, which are by no alchemy transmutable into each other. Many alchemists continue, even in this closing half of the nineteenth century, to make the attempt, and some even atter themselves that they are succeed ing; but the sturdy reply of human consciousness is, that the four elements are diverse and not transmutable; or, if any trans mutation is possible, it must be confined to this, that matter may, in some manner, be an effect of spirit. But to us, finite Spirits, nothing more is granted than the rearrangement, the partial con trol of matter, not its creation. Matter. As we know it, is dis tinguished by its being the recipient and dispenser of force which force, so far as we know it, is from Spirit alone. This obedience of matter to spirit gives justification to our Suspicion that it is the creation of Spirit. Book Description
In this philosophical treatise, Charles Babbage and Thomas Hill explore the relationship between geometry and religious faith. Drawing on the principles of the Bridgewater Treatises, they argue for a harmonious coexistence between science and spirituality, offering a compelling vision of a world in which reason and faith can work together. Book Description
Harold Jacobs’s Geometry created a revolution in the approach to teaching this subject, one that gave rise to many ideas now seen in the NCTM Standards. Since its publication nearly one million students have used this legendary text. Suitable for either classroom use or self-paced study, it uses innovative discussions, cartoons, anecdotes, examples, and exercises that unfailingly capture and hold student interest. This edition is the Jacobs for a new generation. It has all the features that have kept the text in class by itself for nearly 3 decades, all in a thoroughly revised, full-color presentation that shows today’s students how fun geometry can be. The text remains proof-based although the presentation is in the less formal paragraph format. The approach focuses on guided discovery to help students develop geometric intuition.
