Cet ouvrage s’appuie sur le recensement d’une centaine d’opérations qui brosse une période de près de 80 ans d’engagement de l’armée française. Sur le plan géopolitique l’analyse fait ressortir les interactions réciproques entre le rang de la France à l’échelle mondiale et ses capacités de projection aérienne. La première partie s’articule en trois chapitres qui ont pour objectif de cerner précisément les différentes conceptions de la projection aérienne, puis de formuler des critères propres à l’étude. La guerre d’Indochine (1945-1954) constitue un acte fondateur d’une géographie militaire aérienne, à différentes échelles.
