Book Description
Excerpt from The Link: November, 1955 One day he got to wondering what his wife would think Of the change that had come over him. She had been very religious in her early life but the experience had gone sour. Since then she had not gone to Church and refused to read the Bible. He knew that she would be surprised, and he wanted aboveeverything for her to understand and to walk in the way with him. He sought out one Of the men who was going home and said, Say, old man, would you mind taking my insurance papers to be mailed to my wife? That was agreed. His friend seemed to sense that this question was merely a front for something that lay deeper and asked, What bothers you, Ken? Ken thought a long, long time be fore making a reply, and then it was as if he were talking to a third per son. You know, stumbled Ken, I was just -wondering if there was a way for someone to tell my wife about my wonderful discovery Of the way of the bended knee. I know she will think that I must be out Of my mind to talk Of surrender. I was rather domineering in Our home, and usually insisted on those around me making the surrenders. I know it was selfish. It was agreed that if one Of the group should be able to get a mes sage to his wife that would' be done. In any case they would all keep on praying for him and his wife. But the excitement Of preparation for the repatriation group began to pall on him. He became moody. His appetite went, and he could not sleep for wondering if ever he would get out Of Hong Kong. He skipped several Of the fellowship meetings, for he felt he would be a hypocrite to go with all his questions. Book Description
Excerpt from Popular Government, Vol. 22: November, 1955 The issue can best be raised with a particular kind of taxpayer or class of taxpayers in mind. I am thinking of those who own property and do business in more than one place, more than one county, more than one town. If the discount pat tern is uniform throughout the state these taxpayers will adjust their business and accounting practices to meet that pattern; if the discount pattern varies from location to loca tion (not to say from one session of the legislature to another) the tax payer must make a series of busi ness and accounting adjustments which, it can be argued with force, place him at a distinct disadvantage. Perhaps the new taxpayer or the one who first meets this situation will feel the discrimination most sharply. So long as the state itself imposes no property tax for administration by local units of government the question of the constitutionality of local variants from the state-wide law runs little risk of judicial testing, but whether they do violence to the spirit if not the letter of the Constitution's uniformity requirement is still a ser ious question for those concerned with law-making in this state. Book Description
Excerpt from The Demand and Price Situation: November, 1955 Total demands on the economy and output expanded rapidly during the past year. The gross product rose by 9 percent to a record rate of 392 billion dol lars in the third quarter of 1955. Prices on the average have been fairly stable However, prices of industrial products have been rising, especially in the last 3 or 1+ months while prices of farm products have declined further. Prospects for further expansion in demand point to a continued rise in economic activity in the coming year. The gross national product and consumer incomes for 1956, as a whole, are likely to be higher than in 1955. Demands in some sectors of the econonw, notably business demand for inventories and consumer demand for auto mobiles and housing, may not be up to the high levels of 1955. But this is expected to be offset by continued expansion in business investment in plant and equipment, a stronger consumer market for most goods and services, and increased expenditures by State and local Governments.
