Book Description
Genetic engineering and biotechnology along with conventional breeding have played an important role in developing superior cultivars by transferring economically important traits from distant, wild and even unrelated species to the cultivated varieties which otherwise could not have been possible with conventional breeding. There is a vast amount of literature pertaining to the genetic improvement of crops over last few decades. However, the wonderful results achieved by crop scientists in food legumes’ research and development over the years are scattered in different journals of the World. The two volumes in the series ‘Alien Gene Transfer in Crop Plants’ address this issue and offer a comprehensive reference on the developments made in major food crops of the world. These volumes aim at bringing the contributions from globally renowned scientists at one platform in a reader-friendly manner. The second volume entitled, “Alien Gene Transfer in Crop Plants: Achievements and Impact” will deal more with the practical aspects. This volume will cover achievements of alien gene transfer in major food crops of the world and their impact on development of newer genetic variability and additional avenues for selection; development of superior cultivars for increased yield, resistance to biotic and abiotic stresses, improved nutritional and industrial quality; innovation of new techniques and positive as well as negative environmental implications. This volume has been divided into four groups with an aim to cover all major cereals, pulses, oilseeds and other crops (vegetable and horticultural crops) which are of economic importance.

Book Description
In the present study, useful genes were isolated and characterized from the wild species of tomato. Biochemical analysis of different wild species, varieties and hybrids of tomato inferred that the wild species, L. pimpinellifolium is to be a potential source for lycopene. Hence partial cDNA coding for a key enzyme in lycopene biosynthesis, phytoene desaturase (PDS) was isolated by RT-PCR from L. pimpinellifolium. Artificial screening of tomato wild species and cultivars for resistance to Tospovirus, Fusarium and Root knot nematode revealed that L. peruvianum was resistant to all. cDNAs of three R genes coding for Tospovirus, Fusarium and Root knot nematode resistance were isolated from the wild species, L. peruvianum. A cDNA of R gene involved in Fusarium resistance was isolated from L. pimpinellifolium. Sequence analysis using bioinformatics tools viz, LALIGN, BALST, BLASTp, ClustalW, Treetop, ScanProsite of all the four cDNAs isolated corresponding to the different R genes showed considerable homology with already available disease / nematode resistance genes.

Book Description
With contributions from nearly 130 internationally renowned experts in the field, this reference details advances in transgenic plant construction and explores the social, political, and legal aspects of genetic plant manipulation. It provides analyzes of the history, genetics, physiology, and cultivation of over 30 species of transgenic seeds, fruits, and vegetables. Stressing the impact of genetic engineering strategies on the nutritional and functional benefit of foods as well as on consumer health and the global market economy, the book covers methods of gene marking, transferring, and tagging public perceptions to the selective breeding, hybridization, and recombinant DNA manipulation of food.
