Book Description
Engage students with real-world applications of genetics. Informed by more than 50 years' experience and experimentation in teaching genetics, authors Mark Sanders and John Bowman share their excitement about genetics and the dynamism at work in the field with Genetic Analysis: An Integrated Approach . The authors use an integrated approach to help contextualize three core challenges of learning genetics: solving problems, understanding the connection between traditional genetics models and more modern approaches, and understanding evolution. With the 3rd Edition, the authors provide students with additional problem solving guidance and a new emphasis on real-world applications of genetics. They also strive to make learning the details of genetics easier and offer ways to facilitate group work and discussion of genetics problems and concepts. The revision incorporates key updates that keep pace with changes in the field, such as advances in CRISPR-Cas, more discussion of epigenetics and expanded coverage of genomic approaches. For all introductory genetics courses. Pearson eText is a simple-to-use, mobile-optimized, personalized reading experience. It lets students highlight, take notes, and review key vocabulary all in one place, even when offline. Seamlessly integrated videos and other rich media engage students and give them access to the help they need, when they need it. Educators can easily schedule readings and share their own notes with students so they see the connection between their eText and what they learn in class -- motivating them to keep reading, and keep learning. Book Description
Genetic algorithms are playing an increasingly important role in studies of complex adaptive systems, ranging from adaptive agents in economic theory to the use of machine learning techniques in the design of complex devices such as aircraft turbines and integrated circuits. Adaptation in Natural and Artificial Systems is the book that initiated this field of study, presenting the theoretical foundations and exploring applications. In its most familiar form, adaptation is a biological process, whereby organisms evolve by rearranging genetic material to survive in environments confronting them. In this now classic work, Holland presents a mathematical model that allows for the nonlinearity of such complex interactions. He demonstrates the model's universality by applying it to economics, physiological psychology, game theory, and artificial intelligence and then outlines the way in which this approach modifies the traditional views of mathematical genetics. Initially applying his concepts to simply defined artificial systems with limited numbers of parameters, Holland goes on to explore their use in the study of a wide range of complex, naturally occuring processes, concentrating on systems having multiple factors that interact in nonlinear ways. Along the way he accounts for major effects of coadaptation and coevolution: the emergence of building blocks, or schemata, that are recombined and passed on to succeeding generations to provide, innovations and improvements.
