The Use of Geared Spring Tabs for Elevator Control

Book Description
Summary: Equations are presented for the stick force per g in maneuvers obtained with a geared spring tab. A geared spring tab, as defined herein, differs from an ordinary spring tab in that, when the elevator is moved with the stick free at zero airspeed, the tab moves with respect to the elevator in the same manner as a conventional geared, or balancing, tab. The geared spring tab is shown to present the theoretical possibility of obtaining a value of force per g independent of speed regardless of the spring stiffness. If the geared spring tab is used in conjunction with an elevator that has zero variation of hinge moment with angle of attack, the force per g may be made independent of speed at any center-of-gravity location. A suitably designed geared spring tab will provide adequate ground control, small sensitivity of the control forces to slight changes in the elevator hinge-moment parameters, and substantially no variation of stick force per g with speed. The geared spring tab is shown to be most suitable for application to large airplanes.

Book Description
A new mathematical model is proposed to examine the vibration transmission through rolling element bearings in geared rotor systems. Current bearing models, based on either ideal boundary conditions for the shaft or purely translational stiffness element description, cannot explain how the vibratory motion may be transmitted from the rotating shaft to the casing. For example, a vibration model based upon the simple bearing formulations can only predict purely in-plane type motion on the flexible casing plate given only bending motion on the shaft. However, experimental results have shown that the casing plate motion is primarily flexural. This study clarifies this issue qualitatively and quantitatively by developing a comprehensive bearing stiffness matrix is partially verified using available analytical and experimental data, and is completely characterized. This study extends the proposed bearing formulation to analyze the overall geared rotor system dynamics including casting and mounts. The bearing stiffness matrix is included in discrete system models using lumped parameter and/or dynamic finite element techniques. Eigensolution and forced harmonic response due to rotating mass unbalance or kinematic transmissions error excitation for the following examples are computed: (I) single-stage rotor system with flexible shaft supported by two bearings on rigid casing and flexible mounts, (II) spur gear pair system with motor and load inertials attached to two flexible shafts and supported by four bearings on flexibly mounted rigid casing, and (III) case II with flexible casing and rigid mounts. In several of these examples, analytical predictions compare well with measured data, validating the purposed formulation.

Book Description
"The best thing about Steampunk is getting to rewrite history." Or so a reviewer said in commenting about Geared Up Writing Steampunk. But author Beth Daniels totally agrees with them! In this, the 3rd edition of the book, she adds a few more elements to the fun PLUS expands the listing of Steampunk publishers from 36 to 43, many of them new to the volume with no longer valid ones dropped. Since the first edition back in 2010, this has been the only volume to focus solely on writing Steampunk fiction and building the Steampunk stage on which characters play. Steampunk is, without a doubt, the most fun a historian in love with the 19th century can have since this is enhancement rewriting of what events might have been if technology got an extra boost a bit earlier. Reviewers say: "...just plain fun to read," "...essential to anyone wanting to [dip] their toe into writing steampunk. It is told in a no nonsense yet humorous way and gave invaluable info." "Inspirational. Must read again with notepad and pen."

Book Description
This books consists of a replica of two vintage catalogs from the Lima Locomotive Works. The first shows Lima's line of Shay locomotives circa 1921. The second is a spare parts catalog with maintenance information. Featuring descriptive text and photos, this book is a wonderful resource for anyone interested in the age of steam. In 1877, Ephraim Shay came up with a radical design for a logging locomotive that featured a side- mounted set of cylinders. These drove drive shafts, which powered the wheels of both the locomotive and tender. This ¿geared locomotive¿ offered a distinct advantage, in that the entire weight of the engine developed tractive effort. The Lima Locomotive Works of Lima, Ohio, produced the first Shay in 1880. Less than a decade later, the company was producing five different types of Shays, and shipping them throughout the world. The last Shay was built in 1945. Lima produced its last steam engine in 1949, and merged with Baldwin in 1951.

Book Description
In 1892 Charles Heisler received a patent for a new kind of geared locomotive. Equipped with twin canted cylinders, the engine utilized a driveshaft to power outboard axles and connecting rods to power the inboard axles. As a result of this `vee-twin¿ arrangement, the Heisler was one of the fastest geared steam locomotives, providing more power with lower operating costs. Over 600 Heislers were produced from the 1890¿s until 1941, when the Heisler Locomotive Works closed its doors. This reproduction of the company¿s illustrated catalog dates from the 1920¿s. It shows the full line of Heisler products and presents a compelling argument for their use.

Book Description
Summary: In flight tests of an experimental elevator with geared tabs, a cockpit control over the tab gear ratio was found to be satisfactory for adjusting the stick force per g in turning flight according to the pilot's preference. This type of control appears to have application for increasing the center-of-gravity range for satisfactory stick forces in turning flight. Sample calculations made for a fighter airplane indicated that satisfactory stick forces in turning flight can be obtained for any center-of-gravity position at which the elevator control meets other requirements.
