Book Description
As part of a continuing program of gas turbine cycle calculations, the Engine Laboratory of the National Research Council of Canada has proposed a simplified method for calculating off-design-point performance of turbojet and turbofan engines, both at sea level static and at altitude flight conditions. This method specifically implies constancy of component efficiencies and linearity of corrected mass flow with corrected engine speed. During a series of tests on a J-75 two-spool turbojet engine, experimental data were gathered at part-throttle conditions, and subsequently with compressor bleed extraction and with propelling nozzle area change.

Propulsion and Power
Author: Joachim Kurzke
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3319759795
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 766
Book Description
The book is written for engineers and students who wish to address the preliminary design of gas turbine engines, as well as the associated performance calculations, in a practical manner. A basic knowledge of thermodynamics and turbomachinery is a prerequisite for understanding the concepts and ideas described. The book is also intended for teachers as a source of information for lecture materials and exercises for their students. It is extensively illustrated with examples and data from real engine cycles, all of which can be reproduced with GasTurb (TM). It discusses the practical application of thermodynamic, aerodynamic and mechanical principles. The authors describe the theoretical background of the simulation elements and the relevant correlations through which they are applied, however they refrain from detailed scientific derivations.

Commercial Aircraft Propulsion and Energy Systems Research
Author: National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine
Publisher: National Academies Press
ISBN: 0309440998
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 123
Book Description
The primary human activities that release carbon dioxide (CO2) into the atmosphere are the combustion of fossil fuels (coal, natural gas, and oil) to generate electricity, the provision of energy for transportation, and as a consequence of some industrial processes. Although aviation CO2 emissions only make up approximately 2.0 to 2.5 percent of total global annual CO2 emissions, research to reduce CO2 emissions is urgent because (1) such reductions may be legislated even as commercial air travel grows, (2) because it takes new technology a long time to propagate into and through the aviation fleet, and (3) because of the ongoing impact of global CO2 emissions. Commercial Aircraft Propulsion and Energy Systems Research develops a national research agenda for reducing CO2 emissions from commercial aviation. This report focuses on propulsion and energy technologies for reducing carbon emissions from large, commercial aircraftâ€" single-aisle and twin-aisle aircraft that carry 100 or more passengersâ€"because such aircraft account for more than 90 percent of global emissions from commercial aircraft. Moreover, while smaller aircraft also emit CO2, they make only a minor contribution to global emissions, and many technologies that reduce CO2 emissions for large aircraft also apply to smaller aircraft. As commercial aviation continues to grow in terms of revenue-passenger miles and cargo ton miles, CO2 emissions are expected to increase. To reduce the contribution of aviation to climate change, it is essential to improve the effectiveness of ongoing efforts to reduce emissions and initiate research into new approaches.

The Design of High-efficiency Turbomachinery and Gas Turbines
Author: David Gordon Wilson
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 632
Book Description
One of the only texts to focus on turbomachinery and gas turbines from the 'design' point of view, this volume reviews the necessary thermodynamics, gives extensive design data, provides engine and component illustrations (with comments on good and less-than-good design features), and contains many worked examples - allowing students to produce preliminary designs that can be made and run quickly - as early as Ch. 5. More comprehensive than similar texts, it features a simplified - and more accurate thermodynamic treatment that eliminates the confusing use of 'gamma' and specific heat together, and provides individual full-chapter coverage of axial-flow turbines and compressors and radial-flow versions of the same. *Contains a Brief History of Turbomachinery. *Features a design perspective throughout - and enables students to develop a preliminary design after Ch. 5. *Offers a unified treatment of energy transfer and vector diagrams - focusing on principles that can be applied easily to compressors, pumps, turbines - radial and axial. *Includes specialized chapters that give far more design data than other similar texts - allowing students to produce a design that can be made and r
