He therefore believes that his experience, as now embodied in this book, will be of interest and perhaps value to those who take delight in the wonderful results with which the fertile soil and genial climate of our State reward their earnest and loving labor. It is believed that the practical value of the work is added to by the illustrations which are all from photographs especially taken for this purpose. Book Description
Excerpt from Gardening in California, Landscape and Flower This handbook is respectfully submitted to gardeners in California, amateur and professional, as supplementary to, and a modification of those excellent treatises and encyclopedias on Landscape and Flower Gardening which have become the authorities and text-books on the subject, but which were written for the conditions of climate and season in European countries and the Eastern States of our own land. In California these conditions are so different, and the possibilities of the culture and development of trees, shrubs and flowers are so much greater than in Europe or any other of the United States of America, that our gardeners have had to do a great deal of original investigation and experimental work. The results of such investigation and work by the writer are recorded in these pages. The difference referred to is well illustrated by the universally loved Pansy which, in the Eastern States, is sown in February, flowering in May or June, while in California it is sown in July and flowers from November to May, and also by the Acacia which, in the East, is grown in pot in the conservatory, protected by glass and heated by artificial heat, whereas, in our State, it grows, a handsome tree, in any soil in the open air and flowers in midwinter. Although it has been found necessary to treat of the conservatory to a certain extent, yet this has been done only as subsidiary to the main purpose of the book, the treatment, in the conservatory, of plants which are not hardy in the open air locally, being the same here as in any other part of the country. It should, however, be kept in view that hundreds of trees, shrubs and flowers, which cannot possibly exist, in the open air, in those parts of the United States and Europe where the climatic conditions are more harsh than here, flourish and give grand effects out of doors in California. Book Description
Excerpt from With the Flowers, and Trees in California In doing this, the author has tried to revive as vividly as may be, the memory of his own delight and inquisitiveness when, twelve years ago, his eyes first beheld the gardens wild and cultivated of the State which, of all our Commonwealths, is to Flora the most hospitable and by her the most favored; and to set down the answer as well as he can to many questions which naturally arose in his mind then and which are on the lips of many tourists and residents alike, today. Book Description
Excerpt from California Gardening, 1935 The informal, Chrysanthemum-like arrangement of petalage which made Chrysantha so popular last year, is duplicated-in this year's Calendula sensation, Ora Shaggy, one of the All American Novelty Selections for 1935. Orange Shaggy is a very distinct new break 1n Calendulas. The petals are lon'g and deeply fringed or laciniated. Row after row of these long fringed petals overlap each_ other in a rather irregular fashion -and build up a 'bloom with the. Shaggy appearance of some Chrysanthemums. These blooms are of great grace and beauty. Sharply'contrasting with rather formal appearanceof varieties such as Orange King. Etc. The color is a deep orange shading to slightly lighter 'orange in the center of the bloom, giving the flower a de lightful two-toneeffect, Well grown. Orange Shaggy has long stems and forms plants about eighteen inches high. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from California Gardening, 1929 Parcel Post, necessary postage should be added. See our Parcel Post Schedule on page 3. Culture. Beans respond very readily to good soil and cultivation: A light, rich, well drained loam is the most desirable. The use of manure is advisable but should be _used sparingly as it might make the plant run too much to vine. There is no plant more sensitive to cold and wet than the bean. We therefore advise not to plant until the ground has become dry and warm.. The largest returns will result in planting in drills from 2 to 3 feet apart; Cover the seed one and one-half inches deep and thin the young plants 3 to'6 inches apart in the row. If planted in hills about 2 feet apart each way. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
