Book Description
The need has arisen for a comprehensive handbook for engineers faced with problems of radiation shielding design. Although there are several excellent books on shielding, they either do not give enough consideration to the many practical design problems, or are limited to special aspects of the subject. Recognizing the universal need, the International Atomic Energy Agency decided to sponsor the publication ofthe present Engineering Compendium on Radiation Shield ing. At the first editorial discussions it was agreed that, if such a book were to be undertaken, it would be appropriate not only to create a useful design tool for the practising engineer but also to include well-referenced basic data for the research worker. Although trying to keep the book down to a reasonable size, the editors have aimed at a complete presentation of the subject, covering and linking both the tech nology and the science of shielding. Efforts to make terms and definitions consistent throughout have been only partially successful, owing to the continuing development of new ideas. However, inconsisten cies that could not be eliminated are identified whenever possible.

Book Description
This newly published book is intended for dual use as a textbook for students in radiation shielding courses and a reference work for shielding practitioners. It emphasizes the principles behind techniques used in various aspects of shield analysis and presents these principles in many different contexts. This approach is intended to provide a strong base of understanding in order to facilitate use of the large shielding codes that have come to dominate shielding design and analysis. An assumption is made that the reader has an understanding of mathematics through basic calculus and vector analysis as well as a knowledge of the nuclear physics of radioactive decay. For most chapters, problem sets are provided.

Book Description
Excerpt from Structure Shielding Against Fallout Gamma Rays From Nuclear Detonations Attempts to develop satisfactory methods for estimating the shielding properties of ordinary buildings against gamma rays from radioactive fallout began in the early 1950's. Intensive research of many kinds was carried out during the decade from about 1956 to 1966; but in the past decade, there has been a steady decline of new research on these problems. There are many reasons for this, one of which is not, however, the achievement of a fully satisfactory state of the technology. An updating and improvement of the material presented here is overdue, but is not easily effected. We intend this publication to serve 1) as a reference for engineering students, 2) as a reference and source of ideas for engineers engaged in research and development on radiation shielding problems, 3) as a basic reference by architects and engineers concerned with the design of buildings with protective features, and 4) a reference for officials responsible for civil protection in nuclear emergencies. These multiple uses are expected partly because this is the first attempt to bring together and summarize much of the material presented. Book Description
"In this book, authors present current research, studies and technologies to look deeper into gamma rays. The chapters discussed in this book are useful for shielding and dosimetric application for gamma rays in science and engineering. This book focuses on knowledge about production, absorption and measurement of gamma rays, geological objects and gamma radiation, interaction parameters for shielding and dosimetric interest, induced gamma rays, shielding materials, back scattering and various applications. The book demonstrates the theoretical, experimental and simulation for interaction of gamma rays with different types of materials. A thorough description of gamma rays interaction, application of interaction parameters, shielding assessment and dosimetric applications are seen throughout the chapters. Summarized highlights are depicted in each chapter for further utilization of knowledge. This book is an excellent learning tool for the radiation physics scientific community. It can also be used as a self-learning book to understand gamma rays. This book is a collection of investigations for students, researchers and scientists working in the field of radiation physics. Authors of respective chapters are solely responsible for plagiarism of content in their chapters, and regarding the permissions for the previously published work (text and diagrams). The journey of writing the book could only be completed with the strong support of editor's organizations, family members and authors. Authors have participated by sharing research work in the form of chapters. A collection of suitable chapters forms the present book"--
