The National Museums and Galleries of Northern Ireland (MAGNI), created in 1998, brought together the Ulster Museum, the Ulster Folk and Transport Museum, and the Ulster-American Folk Park (and it is also responsible for the operation of W5, the first Science Discovery Centre in Ireland, opened in 2001). The collection comprises some 1.45 million artefacts and works of art. The NIAO examined the structure of MAGNI, and the documentation and storage of the collection. Since 1994 all acquisitions have been documented to SPECTRUM (Standard ProcEdures for CollecTions Recording Used in Museums) standards, an internationally recognised standard for museum documentation. Although considerable progress has been made in computerisation, less than ten per cent of records are currently computerised. NIAO recommends: (i) a key performance indicator covering the percentage of the collection documented to international standards, reported annually; (ii) more photographing of important items (for records and internet use); (iii) regular physical inspection of a sample of records. At present only ten percent of the collection is on display. Storage of the remainder in some 50 separate locations was found to be poor or unacceptable in 30 locations, although the main stores holding the bulk of the collection are classed as good to excellent. NIAO welcomes the storage development plan being created, and recommends consideration of a centralized store, and performance indicators on storage conditions and internet accessibility to improve public access to the collections.

"Lots of painters are obsessed with inventing something," American painter Joan Mitchell (1925-92) said in 1986. "When I was young, it never occurred to me to invent. All I wanted to do was paint." Throughout her life Mitchell remained committed to totally autonomous abstract painting, always driven by this fundamental love for the craft and technique of painting. In a career spanning more than four decades, Mitchell's painting style married the dynamic gesture of the Abstract Expressionists, her generational peers, to a keen sensitivity to natural phenomena such as light and water. Characterized by an intense color palette and fresh gestural energy, often applied on a very large scale, Mitchell's paintings both sensually seduce and intellectually stimulate viewers. Published to accompany a large-scale survey of Mitchell's painting, Joan Mitchell: Retrospective draws from Mitchell's entire oeuvre, from her early work of the 1950s to her late, multipart works painted in her last years. Born in Chicago in 1925, Joan Mitchell studied at Smith College before training at The Art Institute of Chicago. After a fellowship in Paris, Mitchell lived in New York, where she became part of the community of Abstract Expressionist painters. She spent increasing amounts of time in France, eventually moving to Paris in 1959, and remaining there until her death in 1992.

Are national galleries different from other kinds of art gallery or museum? What value is there for the nation in a collection of international masterpieces? How are national galleries involved in the construction national art? National Galleries is the first book to undertake a panoramic view of a type of national institution – which are sometimes called national museums of fine art – that is now found in almost every nation on earth.
