Book Description
Excerpt from Fruits (Noncitrus): Production, Farm Disposition, Value, and Utilization of Sales, 1889-1944 This publication presents statistics on production, farm disposition, price, value, and utilization of fruits (not including citrus) for as many years as data are available, up to and including the 191m crops. For apples, production estimates begin with 1889. The series on other fruits are not so long; some were begun only in recent years. The data given here for the years through 1944 are not expected to require later revisions. Estimates for the 19145, l9ll6, and 19h? Crops are shown in supplemental publications and are subject to revision until after the next Federal Census is published. Estimates of production, utilization, season average price, and value are issued each June for the previous year's cr0ps. Utilization of these fruits varies widely between States and between crops. The categories of use given here cover fj rst commercial use of fruit and not necessarily final utilization. For example, dried-apple chops made into apple butter are considered as dried apples and not as apple butter, and frozen fruits used for pies or preserves are included under frozen fruits. Fruit bought fresh by housewives and later canned or otherwise processed is included in fresh sales. The difference between total production and production having value is the quantity not utilized because of economic conditions. The difference between production and sales of a fruit is the quantity consumed in farm households and quantities not utilized because of economic conditions. Season average rice is the average return to growers from all methods of sale. Value of production is the season average price multiplied by production having value. Value of sales is the season average price multiplied by the quantity sold. The values shown are for the marketing season or crop year, and should not be confused with calendar-year income.
