Service Life Estimation and Extension of Civil Engineering Structures
Author: Vistasp M. Karbhari
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 0857090925
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 318
Book Description
Service life estimation is an area of growing importance in civil engineering both for determining the remaining service life of civil engineering structures and for designing new structural systems with well-defined periods of functionality. Service life estimation and extension of civil engineering structures provides valuable information on the development and use of newer and more durable materials and methods of construction, as well as the development and use of new techniques of estimating service life.Part one discusses using fibre reinforced polymer (FRP) composites to extend the service-life of civil engineering structures. It considers the key issues in the use of FRP composites, examines the possibility of extending the service life of structurally deficient and deteriorating concrete structures and investigates the uncertainties of using FRP composites in the rehabilitation of civil engineering structures. Part two discusses estimating the service life of civil engineering structures including modelling service life and maintenance strategies and probabilistic methods for service life estimation. It goes on to investigate non-destructive evaluation and testing (NDE/NDT) as well as databases and knowledge-based systems for service life estimation of rehabilitated civil structures and pipelines. With its distinguished editors and international team of contributors Service life estimation and extension of civil engineering structures is an invaluable resource to academics, civil engineers, construction companies, infrastructure providers and all those with an interest in improving the service life, safety and reliability of civil engineering structures. - A single source of information on the service life of reinforced concrete and fibre-reinforced polymer (FRP) rehabilitated structures - Examines degradation mechanisms in composites for rehabilitation considering uncertainties in FRP reliability - Provides an overview of probabilistic methods for rehabilitation and service life estimation of corroded structures

Innovation from Within
Author: Stephanie Berzin
Publisher: Oxford University Press
ISBN: 019085880X
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 193
Book Description
We are in the midst of an entrepreneurial moment, as doers and makers have unprecedented access to crowdfunding and it has never been easier or cheaper to start a business or an organization. And yet, often overlooked among this flood of start-ups that spring up daily is the untapped potential of new ideas that can emerge from inside already-established agencies, companies, and nonprofits. To build the capacity for innovation requires attention to building organizations and individuals who are ready and have the right tools to develop, implement, and sustain innovations. Innovation from Within provides a framework specifically for nonprofits through the Nonprofit Innovation Model (IN Model), which guides leaders in developing and implementing innovation from within their own nonprofit organization. The time has come to get more people into the business of solving problems in extraordinary ways and to amplify the impact of the field of social innovation by bringing along the people who provide the bulk of services and impact. This book is the guide and a call to action for building that momentum.

Working in the Service Sector
Author: Gerhard Bosch
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1134456433
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 398
Book Description
The rise to prominence of the service sector - heralded over half a century ago as the great hope for the twenty-first century - has come to fruition. In many cases, employment in the service sector now outnumbers that in manufacturing sectors, and it is accepted that in all developed countries, the service sector is the only one in which employment will grow in future. The reasons for this is the subject of much controversy and debate, the outcomes of which are not merely of academic interest but of decisive importance for economic policy and the quality of working and living conditions in future. In order to examine these various arguments, research teams from eight European countries worked together for three years on a comparative study of the evolution of service sector employment in EU member states. They also investigated working and employment conditions in five very different service industries (banking, retailing, hospitals, IT services and care of the elderly) in a number of countries, and the results of their research are presented in this informative new collection, of interest to students academics and researchers involved in all aspects of industrial economics.

From Telecommunications to Electronic Services
Author: Robert R. Bruce
Publisher: Butterworth-Heinemann
ISBN: 1483161358
Category : Law
Languages : en
Pages : 616
Book Description
Report of the Study of Telecommunications Structures: From Telecommunications to Electronic Services: A Global Spectrum of Definitions, Boundary Lines, and Structures focuses on the advancements in the processes, methodologies, and regulations involved in telecommunications and electronic services. The book first elaborates on common themes and a comparative analysis, including a comparative assessment of definitional and boundary line issues; varying national approaches to the structures of the telecommunications industry; and "engines" for change, institutional mechanisms, and economic pressures. The manuscript then examines international policy issues and institutional perspective of international issues. Topics cover agreements for information and financial service-oriented networks; enhanced service interconnection; impact of international satellite services on national tariff and service policies; and spillover of changes in domestic policy to the international arena. The publication takes a look at the growth of telecommunications and electronic services in the United States, United Kingdom, Japan, and Canada. Discussions focus on the British approach to service definitions and categories; definitional issues raised by the telecommunications business law; reconciling competitive goals with advanced service capabilities; jurisdictional boundaries in Canadian telecommunications; and domestic satellite policies. The text is a valuable source of data for telecommunications and electronic services experts wanting to explore the progress in telecommunications and electronic services.
