Book Description
Patterson provides an insight into what happens when an investigative project is undertaken and what roles editors, publishers, and newspapers themselves play. Analyzing six recent, widely-acclaimed investigative stories, the book answers the questions: How did the idea for the story originate? How was the information found? How were the stories written and edited? And, what were the results of the investigation? The author considers ethical dilemmas as well, such as the unattributed sources, the use of deception and misrepresentation, and how reporters must keep personal feelings from interfering with their work. This story of investigative reporting is told through interviews with reporters, editors, and publishers involved in these award-winning series. ISBN 0-3231-06058-0: $28.50.

Book Description
How should politicians act? When should they try to lead public opinion and when should they follow it? Should politicians see themselves as experts, whose opinions have greater authority than other people's, or as participants in a common dialogue with ordinary citizens? When do virtues like toleration and willingness to compromise deteriorate into moral weakness? In this innovative work, Andrew Sabl answers these questions by exploring what a democratic polity needs from its leaders. He concludes that there are systematic, principled reasons for the holders of divergent political offices or roles to act differently. Sabl argues that the morally committed civil rights activist, the elected representative pursuing legislative results, and the grassroots organizer determined to empower ordinary citizens all have crucial democratic functions. But they are different functions, calling for different practices and different qualities of political character. To make this case, he draws on political theory, moral philosophy, leadership studies, and biographical examples ranging from Everett Dirksen to Ella Baker, Frances Willard to Stokely Carmichael, Martin Luther King Jr. to Joe McCarthy. Ruling Passions asks democratic theorists to pay more attention to the "governing pluralism" that characterizes a diverse, complex democracy. It challenges moral philosophy to adapt its prescriptions to the real requirements of democratic life, to pay more attention to the virtues of political compromise and the varieties of human character. And it calls on all democratic citizens to appreciate "democratic constancy": the limited yet serious standard of ethical character to which imperfect democratic citizens may rightly hold their leaders--and themselves.

Book Description
The road before her is twisted. She is looking for them. A doctor. A lawyer. A murderer. They are somewhere out there, in front of her, where the roads wind and wander, where routes end and new avenues begin. There is a map beside her, but she stopped following that long ago. Some journeys have no blueprint. There are turns and detours, dead ends and tricky mazes. The labyrinth called America is a tricky turnpike to travel. She knows just two things as she stares into the white blizzard that nearly obscures the winding street in front of her. There was a beginning. She started this journey in San Diego, but it really all began long before that. Others were on this quest before she joined the pilgrimage east. And there will be an end. But the end isn't so easy as the beginning. The way may become long and dangerous. One can become lost. How many ever get to the place where they belong? Some paths take one to a place of wonder: a location made of wishes and ambition, a better place than home. Many people work hard to get to these ends. Some work for it their entire lives. And then there are the places one finds when they lose their way: scary places fraught with foreignness and ferocity. Most folks end up there without really meaning to. But some actually search it out. They head down that one-way road with reckless abandon. There are each of these types before her, somewhere along the long course: A doctor. His wife. A murderer. And Janet Dice has to follow the twisted road to find them.

Book Description
In this book, Alex Rhys-Taylor offers a ground-breaking sensory ethnography of East London. Drawing on the multicultural context of London, one of the most cosmopolitan cities in the world, he explores concepts such as gentrification, class antagonism, new ethnicities and globalization. Rhys-Taylor shows how London is characterized by its rich history of socioeconomic change and multiculture, exploring how its smells and food are integral to understanding both its history and the reality of London’s urban present. From the fiery chillies sold by street grocers which are linked to years of cultural exchange, through ‘cuisines of origin’ like jellied eels to hybridized dishes such as the chicken katsu wrap, sensory experiences are key to understanding the complex cultural genealogies of the city and its social life. Each of the eight chapters combines micro histories of ingredients such as fried chicken, bush-meat and curry sauce, featuring narratives from individuals that provide a unique, engaging account of the evolution of taste and culture through time and space. With its innovative methodology, this is a highly original contribution to the fields of sensory studies, food studies, urban studies and cultural studies.
