Not illustrated. 1883 edition. Excerpt: ... except Gaspi, which I consider very well adapted for a settlement; there is a bay there that extends far back into the land, and forms a basin fit for ships to take shelter in. At the head of the bay the land seems very well adapted for a settlement. Besides there is very good cdd fishing in these parts. There are also three other fine harbours, ten or twelve leagues lower down, namely, PercSe Island, Bonaventure and Miscou, from all of which harbours ships go to fish for cod every year It would be a good place for a settlement, on the score of facility of communication with Quebec, access to which in small vessels is easy. There, to the right, is seen the Island of Anticosti, of which I shall not speak to you, not having been to it; only. I have heard it said that there is very good land on it, as well as on the north shore of the great river, from Tadousac downwards, where one meets with many fine rivers, whose waters are deep and abound with fish, especially salmon; there are prodigious quantities of this fish there, according to the accounts given to me by those who have been there. From Tadousac to a place seven leagues from Quebec, called Cape Tourmente, the country is quite uninhabiable, being nothing but rocks, quite steep and high. I have observed only one place along there, and that is Saint Paul's Bay, about half way up, and opposite to Coudies Island, which looks well as one passes it, as do the islands between Tadousac and Quebec, all of which are fit for settlement. I do not describe any of them in particular, my intention being only to give you a short sketch of the country as a whole, and of some of the principal places in it. The south shore, from Tadousac to Quebec, is very "beautiful; and the land is low, and appears...

Book Description
Excerpt from Canada in the Seventeenth Century From the French of Pierre Generosity You are to know, my dear readers, that I have two reasons for writing this little treatise. The first is, that I was invited by many respectable people, whom I had the honour to converse with, while I was in France, and who took great pleasure in hearing about this country, and in being disabused of the unfavourable opinions they had entertained of it in some respects, to send them some account of this New France, that is to say, of what the country is like and of what is to be found in it, in order that they might make it known to their friends. The number of those who asked me to do so being great, 't would not have been without difficulty that I could have complied with their requests, and therefore, I resolved to have this description printed, and to beg of them to have recourse to it. The second reason is, that having become aware of His Majesty's affection for his New France, and of his resolution to destroy our enemies, the Iroquois, and to cause this country to be peopled, I thought that I should oblige many persons who might have a mind to come here, or to send some of their relations here, by making the country known to them before they came. I had long had a thought of this kind in my mind, and I always hoped that some one would take a pen in hand for the above purpose; but seeing that no one made it his duty to do so, I resolved to write this description, while waiting for some one else to write one in more elegant language, because, for my part, I have contented myself with merely writing to you of facts as they are.
