Book Description
One of the twentieth century's most important design visionaries, German architect and structural engineer Frei Otto(b. 1925) made his mark with a series of super-light tensile structures—such as the West German Pavilion for Montreal's Expo 67 and the Olympic Stadium in Munich (1972)—that are celebrated for their technical ingenuity and material efficiency. Yet despite Otto's achievements, relatively little has been published on his work. A Conversation with Frei Otto features a comprehensive interview with Otto as well as his critical text Fundamentals of a Future Architecture in its entirety. In his conversation with Juan María Songel, Otto talks freely about everything from his early connections to the Bauhaus to his thoughts on the current state of engineering and architecture. The latest in our Conversations series, this book also includes images of Otto's most important and well-known works.

The Structural Basis of Architecture

Book Description
This is a book about structures that shows students how to "see" structures as integral to architecture, and how knowledge of structures is the basis for understanding both the mechanical and conceptual aspects inherent to the art of building. Analyzing the structural principles behind many of the best known works of architecture from past and present alike, this book places the subject within a contemporary context. The subject matter is approached in a qualitative and discursive manner, and is illustrated by many photographs of architectural projects and structural behaviour diagrams. This new edition is revised and updated throughout, includes worked-out examples, and is perfect as either an introductory structures course text or as a designer’s sourcebook for inspiration.

Nature is in many different ways a pool for the productive human being, but also a counterpoint to his/her own work. This book offers a richly illustrated overview of the history of nature in architecture, civil engineering and art.

Book Description
Physical models have been, and continue to be used by engineers when faced with unprecedented challenges, when engineering science has been inadequate or even non-existent, and in any other situation when engineers have needed to raise their confidence in a design proposal to a sufficient level in order to begin construction. For this reason, models have mostly been used by designers and constructors of highly innovative projects, when previous experience has not been available. The book covers the history of using physical models in the design and development of civil and building engineering projects including Robert Stephenson?s Britannia Bridge in the 1840s, the masonry Aswan Dam in the 1890s and the Boulder Dam in the 1930s; tidal flow in estuaries and wind and seismic loads on structures from the 1890s, the acoustics of concert halls and the design of thin concrete shell roofs from the 1920s, and the dynamic behaviour of tall buildings from the 1930s, as well as and cable-net and membrane structures in the 1960s. Individual designers featured include Eduardo Torroja, Pier Luigi Nervi, Heinz Hossdorf, Heinz Isler, Frei Otto, Sergio Musmeci and Mamoru Kawaguchi. The book concludes with overviews of the current use of physical models alongside computer models, for example in boundary layer wind tunnels, seismic engineering, hydrology, soil mechanics, and air flow in buildings. Traditionally, progress in engineering has been attributed to the creation and use of engineering science, the understanding of materials properties and the development of new construction methods. The book argues that the use of reduced-scale models has played an equally important part in the development of civil and building engineering. However, like the history of engineering design itself, this crucial contribution has not been widely reported or celebrated. The book includes 39 chapters written by 29 authors from ten different countries.
