Book Description
That a science of human conduct is possible, that what any man may do even in moments of the most sober and careful reflection can be understood and explained, has seemed to many a philosopher to cast doubt upon our common view that any human action can ever be said to be truly free. This book, first published in 1961, looks into crucially important issues that are often ignored in the familiar arguments for and against the possibility of free action. These issues are brought to light and examined in some detail.

Book Description
This volume seeks to further the use of formal methods in clarifying one of the central problems of philosophy: that of our free human agency and its place in our indeterministic world. It celebrates the important contributions made in this area by Nuel Belnap, American logician and philosopher. Philosophically, indeterminism and free action can seem far apart, but in Belnap’s work, they are intimately linked. This book explores their philosophical interconnectedness through a selection of original research papers that build forth on Belnap’s logical and philosophical work. Some contributions take the form of critical discussions of Belnap's published work, some develop points made in his publications in new directions, and others provide additional insights on the topics of indeterminism and free action. In Nuel Belnap’s work on indeterminism and free action, three formal frameworks figure prominently: the simple branching histories framework known as "branching time;" its relativistic spatio-temporal extension, branching space-times; and the “seeing to it that” (stit ) logic of agency. As those frameworks provide the formal background for the contributed papers, the volume introduction gives an overview of the current state of their development. It also introduces case-intensional first order logic (CIFOL), a general intensional logic offering resources for a first-order extension of the mentioned frameworks and a recent research focus of Belnap’s. The volume also contains an extended biographical interview with Nuel Belnap.

Book Description
In Naturally Free Action, Oisin Deery argues that free will exists, where free will is understood as the ability to act freely, and free actions as exercises of that ability. This conclusion is supported by showing how the concept of free will plausibly refers to many actual human behaviors, and how these behaviors count as a natural category or kind. Deery also addresses the role of phenomenology in fixing the reference of the concept, arguing that our phenomenology as of deciding or acting freely is typically accurate, even if determinism is true. The result is a realist, naturalisticframework for theorizing about free will, according to which free will almost certainly exists and we act freely. This verdict mostly sidesteps the compatibility question, which asks whether free will is compatible with determinism. Even so, Deery maintains that the natural-kind view about free willsupports compatibilism and provides compatibilists with an attractive way to be realists about free will. Additionally, the book argues that this view has the resources to respond to recent empirical threats to free will, including those posed by findings about behaviors caused by implicit biases. Finally, Deery demonstrates how the natural-kind view has the resources to address emerging questions about whether artificially intelligent agents might ever act freely or be responsible for their behaviors, and if so in what sense.

Book Description
A user’s guide to understanding contemporary free speech issues in the United States Americans today are confronted by a barrage of questions relating to their free speech freedoms. What are libel laws, and do they need to be changed to stop the press from lying? Does Colin Kaepernick have the right to take a knee? Can Saturday Night Live be punished for parody? While citizens are grappling with these questions, they generally have nowhere to turn to learn about the extent of their First Amendment rights. The Fight for Free Speech answers this call with an accessible, engaging user’s guide to free speech. Media lawyer Ian Rosenberg distills the spectrum of free speech law down to ten critical issues. Each chapter in this book focuses on a contemporary free speech question—from student walkouts for gun safety to Samantha Bee’s expletives, from Nazis marching in Charlottesville to the muting of adult film star Stormy Daniels— and then identifies, unpacks, and explains the key Supreme Court case that provides the answers. Together these fascinating stories create a practical framework for understanding where our free speech protections originated and how they can develop in the future. As people on all sides of the political spectrum are demanding their right to speak and be heard, The Fight for Free Speech is a handbook for combating authoritarianism, protecting our democracy, and bringing an understanding of free speech law to all.

Book Description
In this memorable first book, Behind the Dolphin Smile, Richard O'Barry told the inspiring story of his personal transformation from world-famous dolphin trainer (Flipper was his pupil) to dolphin liberator. Now, in To Free a Dolphin, he passionately recounts the dramatic story of his heart-breaking campaign to release captive dolphins back into the wild. With wit and insight he chronicles the extreme opposition he has faced from bureaucrats, major players in the captive-dolphin industry, rival wildlife groups, and well-meaning sentimentalists. He introduces readers to famous show animals he has helped, including Bogie and Bacall of Key Largo. And, most fascinating, he describes his struggles to deprogram and rehabilitate dolphins emotionally scarred from years of captivity--struggles that become battles for the animals' souls.

Book Description
This book, a work on human doing, analyses and applies three central aspects of human life – Action, Freedom and Responsibility – in the wide spectrum of the Philosophy of Mind. Reflections on these issues and their interconnections have a significant effect on the Philosophy of Value and application of ethical theories in practical life. This book even reconstructs the conceptual connection between action and freedom, on the one hand, and that between freedom and responsibility, on the other. It also puts the concepts of freedom and determinism to critical test and reinterprets them from different angles and perspectives. The conventional doctrine of karma, based on the teachings of the BhagavadgÁtÀ, is relieved from its usual deterministic presentation and a logically reasonable explanation is offered. Human actions and human agency are central concepts in the philosophy of mind and action. Free will and responsibility constitute the bedrock of the moral life of the human agents and the book pinpoints that freedom is meant to undertake the goal-oriented actions. It is, therefore, focused on the enquiry into the various aspects of philosophy of mind, as well as the philosophy of value.

Book Description
Distributed applications demand reliable, high-performance messaging. The Apache Pulsar server-to-server messaging system provides a secure, stable platform without the need for a stream processing engine like Spark. Contributed by Yahoo to the Apache Foundation, Pulsar is mature and battle-tested, handling millions of messages per second for over three years at Yahoo. Apache Pulsar in Action is a comprehensive and practical guide to building high-traffic applications with Pulsar, delivering extreme levels of speed and durability. about the technology Pulsar is a streaming messaging system designed for high performance server-to-server messaging. Built and tested under intense conditions at Yahoo, Pulsar has been proven in production and can handle millions of messages per second. Now free and open-source, Pulsar''s unique architecture helps solve some of the challenges of modern development. Pulsar avoids latency in streaming data transmission, making it a powerful tool for IoT Edge analytics. Its unified messaging model improves the performance of microservices architecture, and its tiered storage capabilities allow for larger volumes of data to be handled without fear of data loss. Pulsar''s flexible API interface works with Java, C++, Python, and Go, making it easy to incorporate Pulsar into your stack. about the book Apache Pulsar in Action is a hands-on guide to building scalable streaming messaging systems for distributed applications and microservices systems. You''ll start with Pulsar''s fundamentals, each illustrated by real-world examples, as you get to grips with Pulsar''s unique architecture. Pulsar contributor David Kjerrumgaard teaches the skills you need to deploy a Pulsar server, ingest data from third-party systems, and deploy lightweight computing logic with simple functions. You''ll learn to employ Pulsar''s seamless scalability through relatable case studies, including an IOT analytics application that can be deployed within a resource constrained environment and a microservices application based on Pulsar functions. At the end of this practical book, you''ll be ready to fully take advantage of Pulsar to create high-traffic message-driven applications. what''s inside Publish from Apache Pulsar into third-party data repositories and platforms Design and develop Apache Pulsar functions Perform interactive SQL queries against data stored in Apache Pulsar Examples of Pulsar-based microservices that you can download and try yourself about the reader Written for experienced Java developers.
