Individuals often turn to the news media in order to understand new and unfamiliar topics. The news media, therefore, is tasked with helping individuals make sense of unfamiliar topics through their use of framing. Once an individual reads the news media frame, they have the ability to share that news media frame directly to their social network via social media. Given that framing is an active, iterative process where issues are framed and reframed at each stage of the communication process, it is possible that individuals are reframing the news media article as they share it. The first study, presented here, therefore seeks to understand whether and to what extent individuals are actively reframing news media articles as they share them to social media. Beyond examining the extent to which individuals are retaining or changing the original news media frame, I also examine whether the source of the original news media article effects this process. I find that overall, individuals are retaining the original news media frame when sharing news media articles to Twitter. This relationship is dependent, however, on whether the news media article originates from a mainstream news outlet as compared to a partisan news outlet. Indeed, individuals are more likely to change the original news media frame when the article originates from a mainstream news media outlet as compared to when the article originates from a partisan source. While the first study seeks to answer the extent to which individuals are actively reframing news media articles on Twitter, the second study addresses the effect of exposure to these competitively framed messages might have on the individual. Specifically, this study examines how exposure to a competitively framed message, where the user-generated frame presents one frame, and the news media frame presents a competing perspective affects an individual’s attitude towards an emerging scientific technology. Critically, the study examines how individuals grapple with two different source types: a partisan source that is either a member of their political ingroup or outgroup and a second source that is a news media outlet. Overall, I find that the extent to which the source of the user-generated frame influences one’s attitudes is dependent upon one’s political ideology and trust in the news media.
