Fragrant Forever is the third book of Fragrant Port trilogy. It reflects the situation wherein the Hong Kong British companies, the Hong Kong Chinese companies and the Mainland Chinese companies mix with each other, support each other and compete with each other during the 12-year transitional period after the signature of the Sino-British Joint Declaration on the question of Hong Kong’s return to China. With the assistance of the Hong Kong Chinese magnates such as Swan and the others, the Hong Kong British firms, which have decided to stay on in Hong Kong, manage to tide over their difficulties by carrying out extensive structural readjustment and integration of interests. On the other hand, Catherine Grey, a young girl coming to Hong Kong from England to seek opportunities in the transitional period, and Tony Ho, Brown’s former maidservant Sister Lotus’s grandson who returns to Hong Kong after having been entrapped in Mainland China for 17 years, join hands and pursue their aggressive career. They get married after struggling for a way out shoulder to shoulder for a period of time. The background time of the novel is set from the talks on the question of Hong Kong by the British and Chinese governments at the end of 1982 to the hand-over of Hong Kong to China on July 1, 1997. Between this period, there were the deadlock during the subsequent talks in 1983, the signature of the Joint Declaration by the two governments on the question of Hong Kong in 1984, the Tian An Men Event in 4 June 1989, the 1992-1995 disputes between the British and Chinese governments over the proposed plan of reforming the political system of Hong Kong put forward by Christopher Patten, the last governor of Hong Kong, and the Chinese side decides to go its own way, refusing to cooperate with the British side in this regard.
