Book Description
FracFlow96 is a 3D integral finite difference multiphase fractured porous media flow simulator. Code verification and testing was performed by comparing the numerical results of model runs with results of two analytical solutions. Multiphase flow and fracture flow capabilities were both tests. FracFlow96 was used to investigate the dynamics of multiphase fluid flow and the fluid saturation distribution in the fractured porous volcanic tuffs of Yucca Mountain, Nevada. The results of the simulations are consistent with observations and interpretations from the USGS Pneumatic Testing and Monitoring program. Both show rapid movement of pressure transients in response to diurnal barometric pressure fluctuations and damping of those fluctuations in or beneath zones of elevated water saturation. Repository design might be improved by the identification of potential zones of water ponding, which can be predicted based upon hydrogeologic material property contrasts and saturation states.
