Book Description
Excerpt from Four Years in Upper Burma I have endeavoured to draw as faithful and accurate a picture as possible of the country and people, and I have tried to show, from the standpoint of a sympathetic but impartial witness, what the annexation of an Oriental country like Burma really means, what are its immediate results, and what are the many strong points and the few weak points in our rule. Book Description
Excerpt from Burmese Wonderland: A Tale of Travel in Lower and Upper Burma Yesterday, while I was planning the arrangement of these pages, the relics in the Arakan Pagoda were seen to fly up towards the spire, and hang there, glittering about the crown. The omen is surely propitious. This morning a Burmese friend of mine, while bathing in the Irrawaddy, was seized round the waist by a Ye Bilu, or Water God, which would have dragged him away, had not the neighbours rushed in and driven off the River Nat. Maung Gyi himself has since confirmed the story. "My Lord has correctly heard the facts, except that the Ye Bilu also went off with my lungyi leaving me 'a modest man' to reach home in extreme confusion." There are two Burmas. There is one with Diarchy which is dull enough, but affords sport to quite a number of people. The other is half esoteric. It is just a Wonderland. Like Alice, you can follow a White Rabbit down into it with the pleasurable assurance of exciting adventures. Not long ago a little bird suddenly began to bet; and a giant mushroom, far larger than Alice's, caused a thrill of excitement. Book Description
Excerpt from Burma War conditions and consequent war service are responsible for the interruption of this series of Provincial Geographies. Subsequent reforms in the political constitution of India necessitated further delay; but, whether the Government of Burma remains under the Governor-General of India or becomes answerable direct to the King-Emperor, the Province must necessarily remain a geographical and political, as it is a distinct ethnographical, unit - a Burmese nation. For this, as for previous volumes of the same series, the author has been chosen because his long and intimate experience of the Province enables him to present in true perspective a thumb-nail sketch of the land and its people. In this respect there are two living authorities who stand in a class apart - Shwe Yoe (Sir George Scott), whose writings have brought to the West a humanitarian picture of the "Silken East," and the author of A Civil Servant in Burma, whose service of 33 years brought him into intimate touch with every phase of Burmese life and administration, from 1878, when the northern limit of British control was restricted to the Province of Pegu, through the third Burmese war of 1885, when King Thebaw's misrule of Upper Burma was abruptly terminated, and the subsequent years of pacification and economic development, till he retired as Lieutenant-Governor of the whole Province in 1910. The Cambridge University Press is fortunate in finding Sir Herbert Thirkell White with the leisure to review from afar the land which he served with affection and recognized distinction. Book Description
Excerpt from Big-Game Shooting in Upper Burma For the rest, I have only to say that I make no pretensions to the possession of literary talent, and beg my readers to excuse the lack of style which I fear the following pages will too surely portray. But I would ask them to believe that everything the book contains is the result of my own observations and experiences, and that I have in no way culled from others either descriptions or facts which I have been unable to corroborate. I am indebted to the American Baptist Mission Press, Rangoon, for the excellent map which accompanies this volume. It is hoped that the list of shooting localities at the end of the book, and the glossary of Burmese words likely to occur daily in the jungle, will be of use to those who are new to the country.
