Book Description
William L. Ilgen's book Forge Work is an instructional text detailing metalwork, and more specifically working with a forge. The original purpose of the book, as outlined in the author's preface, was to commit to text many of the oral instructions provided to metalworking and blacksmithing students so that they may have a reference document to which they can refer. Divided into eight chapters, Forge Work is a thorough and expansive reference book. The book begins with an introduction to the tools and appliances commonly used by smiths. Ilgen's writing is accessible for the layperson, so much so that a reader with no experience in forging could comfortably make this book their introduction into the craft. From his introduction to the tools, Ilgen progresses to a discussion of some specific forging operations, including straightening, twisting, welding, and scarfing, among many others. The author outlines various practice exercises to be used by students of metalworking so as to improve their skills and understanding of the craft. Later chapters cover more advanced topics, such as the treatment of steel, tool making, art smithing, and scroll work. Pictures are included throughout, however many have unfortunately not survived republication. William L. Ilgen's Forge Work is a success as both a textbook for students of metal work and as a reference book for those more experienced in the craft. The index that concludes the book is invaluable, and the clear and concise directions throughout make for an illuminating read. While other books have been published on the topic, few cover the information with as much depth and breadth as Forge Work. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Find more at www.forgottenbooks.com This book is a reproduction of an important historical work. Forgotten Books uses state-of-the-art technology to digitally reconstruct the work, preserving the original format whilst repairing imperfections present in the aged copy. Book Description
Excerpt from The History of Valley Forge A large portrait of a plain, unassuming man was hanging on the wall of the old Camp School-house in Valley Forge park, when John U. Francis, Sr., publisher of this history, took charge. Father was born in Lower Providence township, just across the Schuylkill river from the Cradle of American Liberty. His great grandfather, Captain Arnold Francis, had commanded the Providence militia and had rendered conspicuous service under Washington at Valley Forge. In the family, Valley Forge was sacred ground and to the name of Washington was rendered a homage hardly due to mortal man. In keeping with the suffering endured, a resentment toward British arrogance was developed which even to-day causes the eye to Hash at the slightest semblance of the thing on our national horizon. A patriotism purer than father's we have never met. To tell the story of Valley Forge, than whom no man knows it better, and to provide for visitors to the park suitable souvenirs has been to him a labor of love. The publication of this history is a becoming climax of his labors. But year after year the portrait continued to hang on the wall. When at times we visited the Park and inquired, Whose is that portrait? practically no light could be given. "It was sent down from Headquarters." Some one knew better than father. In the summer of 1919 a group of visitors entered the School-house. One of the ladies pointed to the portrait and said: "That is a portrait of my grandfather, Henry Woodman. He wrote the first history of Valley Forge." The lady was Mrs. Alice Woodman Smith of Wycombe, Bucks county, Pa. She promised a letter giving particulars, and in due time one was received. Miss Mary S., daughter of Henry Woodman, a lady now of some eighty summers, was the embodiment of the first commandment with promise. She had had a small portrait of her father enlarged and had sent it to the Headquarters at Valley Forge. As already stated, from there it was sent down to the old Camp School-house. Book Description
Praised by both Richard Wright and Ralph Ellison, this classic of Black literature is a brutal depiction of the Great Migration from the Jim Crow South This brutally gripping novel about the African-American Great Migration follows the three Moss brothers, who flee the rural South to work in industries up North. Delivered by day into the searing inferno of the steel mills, by night they encounter a world of surreal devastation, crowded with dogfighters, whores, cripples, strikers, and scabs. Keenly sensitive to character, prophetic in its depiction of environmental degradation and globalized labor, Attaway's novel is an unprecedented confrontation with the realities of American life, offering an apocalyptic vision of the melting pot not as an icon of hope but as an instrument of destruction. Blood on the Forge was first published in 1941, when it attracted the admiring attention of Richard Wright and Ralph Ellison. It is an indispensable account of a major turning point in black history, as well as a triumph of individual style, charged with the concentrated power and poignance of the blues.

Book Description
Excerpt from The Princess of Forge It falls on me to open up the whole box of the Scotchman's deeds, since Of all who were involved I am the best informed. From the beginning of the contest, I was at Forge; my hand more than once was raised in its forwarding; and round my person, it may be said, eddied and swirled and tossed the passions of Forge. Of these latter, then, this narrative will have much to do. Certain particulars it will not be pleasant to write, where the part I played was second best; but certain others, which rest on how I gave Checkmate now and again to one handsome gentleman, I shall relate with silent satisfaction. The author of this book has endeavored to meet this need and to furnish a richly illustrated and fully explained work on the science and art of plain and art metal forging. Much time and effort have been expended in arranging material, in preparing the text and illustrations and in selecting from among many samples of work those suited to every grade Of ability. In particular, the attempt has been made to furnish simple and detailed drawings illustrating each important Operation, as it is felt that the successive steps may often be shown more clearly in this way than by any amount of discussion.
