Book Description
The purpose of the FLP is to identify and protect environmentally important forest areas that are threatened by conversion to nonforest uses and to promote forestland protection and other conservation opportunities. Desired outcomes include the protection of important scenic, cultural, fish, wildlife, and recreational resources, riparian areas, and other ecological values. Traditional forest uses, including timber management, as well as hunting, fishing, hiking, and similar recreational uses are consistent with purposes of the FLP. The FLP acquires and accepts donations of perpetual conservation easements that permanently limit property interests and uses to protect forest values. The FLP also purchases and accepts as donations forestland in full fee. The FLP only works with willing sellers or donors.

Planning for Forest Stewardship
Author: D. Ramsey Russell
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Forest conservation
Languages : en
Pages : 28
Book Description
Since 1991, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Forest Service Forest Stewardship Program has assisted over 200,000 landowners in preparing multipurpose management plans for areas encompassing more than 20 million acres of nonindustrial private forest (NIPF). These plans promote the long-term sustainability of private forests by balancing future public needs for forest products with the need for protecting and enhancing watershed productivity, air and water quality, fish and wildlife habitat, and threatened and endangered species. This guide offers assistance to writers of the plans and includes instructions, requirements, excerpts from well-written plans, and specific recommendations for developing a plan. Plan writers vary among States and include State foresters, private consultants, and, through a coached planning process, landowners themselves. Not all subjects discussed will apply to every property or forest stewardship plan. A major principle for organizing a plan is that each State must retain the greatest amount of discretion in identifying the needs of NIPF landowners in its region, developing plans that reflect those needs, and putting to use those practices that best achieve their resource objectives. As the writer of a plan, you must be flexible in your thinking, allow for future changes, and incorporate, as it becomes available, new knowledge about dynamic ecosystems.

Book Description
This toolkit is designed to help you as a liaison with landowners, community leaders, nonprofit organizations, and volunteer groups that are implementing U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Forest Service programs in your area-meet USDA and Forest Service goals and requirements for outreach to populations that have been traditionally underserved. As our Nation grows more diverse, the need to reach out to all segments of society, particularly the underserved populations and communities, becomes more pronounced. Accordingly, the mission, plans, and activities of the USDA Forest Service must be accessible to all those who qualify for them. This toolkit will help you become aware of USDA Forest Service expectations and guide you in making your community outreach efforts more effective. By assisting you in developing a Public Outreach Plan, the toolkit will help assure that USDA Forest Service programs are open to equal participation by traditionally underserved populations.
