Book Description
Beyond the rustic gates of the Forest Hill Cemetery in Dunmore, Pennsylvania, lies a vast wealth of history. Early in 1870, George Sanderson, Elisha Phinney, William Breck, and J.A. Robertson, with J. Gardner Sanderson and George S. Kingsbury, purchased a 50-acre tract of land from the Pennsylvania Coal Company, which became the last resting place for the cemetery's 18,000 residents. The Civil War section of the cemetery is home to over 300 Union soldiers and two Confederates. Numerous congressmen, lieutenant governors, state representatives, and other elected officials make up Forest Hill's political graveyard. The rich, the poor, the famous, and the unsung all have stories to be told, and this book recounts their tales.

Book Description
Laid out in 1848 as a rural garden cemetery by Henry A. S. Dearborn, Forest Hills Cemetery celebrates its 160th anniversary in 2008 as Boston's premier arboretum cemetery. Since the mid-19th century, its 250 magnificent acres have been the resting place of people of all walks of life, ethnicities, religions, and races. Among these are poets Anne Sexton and E. E. Cummings, playwright Eugene O'Neill, and abolitionist William Lloyd Garrison. Forest Hills's landscape is a museum of sculpture, art, and monuments that chronicles the Victorian age to the present. The first crematorium in New England was here, and prominent Bostonian suffragette Lucy Stone was the first person to be cremated at Forest Hills in 1893. An active cemetery and an all-embracing place, Forest Hills offers a bucolic and picturesque setting for the "gathering of generations" and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Book Description
Within 20 years of the end of the Civil War, Chattanooga was becoming the Dynamo of Dixie. Entrepreneurs and capital from the North were welcomed to the city. New railroads made the area a transportation hub. Fortunes were made in finance, industry, and tourism. Located at the foot of Lookout Mountain, St. Elmo was Chattanoogas first suburb. The founder of the then-independent town, A. M. Johnson and other community leaders chartered the Forest Hills Cemetery in the late 1870s. Many Chattanooga-area families obtained sites within the cemetery, now on the National Register of Historic Places. A rarity for the Reconstruction South, these families included a number of African Americans. From the famous to the infamous, from the remembered to the nearly forgotten, Images of America: Chattanoogas Forest Hills Cemetery highlights a number of Chattanoogans interred in this picturesque historic cemetery.

Book Description
Excerpt from Forest Hills Cemetery: Its Establishment, Progress, Scenery, Monuments, Etc Forest Hills Cemetery, although of recent origin; has rapidly grown in public favor, and the number of those who are now interested in it is so large, that the publication of a book giving an account of its establishment, its consecration, scenery, monuments, etc., may at least prove acceptable to many persons. This volume has been prepared rather for the use of proprietors of burial lots there, or others who are interested in the sacred spot by tender associations, than for the general reader, who might perhaps find too much of detail and dulness in its pages.
