Book Description
Excerpt from Foreign Agriculture, Including Foreign Crops and Markets, Vol. 5: A Weekly Magazine of the United States Department of Agriculture, Foreign Agricultural Service; March 20, 1967 Not many industries can look back over the last 5 years and see a 100-percent increase in' production and look forward with a degree of certainty to still another 100 percent increase in the next 10 years. Japan's mixed-feed industry has this enviable record and future. Production of mixed and formula feeds jumped from million metric tons in 1961 to over 9 million in 1966. The most important factor in this million - metric-ton - per-year rise has been increased egg-layer flocks. In the last 2 years, though, skyrocketing hog numbers have helped to sustain growth in the industry. Since -a sizable share of the ingredients in mixed feeds must be imported, this growth is important to u.s. Farmers. Imports of feedgrains rose from million metric tons in 1961 to million last year. Those from the United States, which totaled only million metric tons in 1961, reached a record million in 1966. Included in 1966 imports from the United States were million metric tons of corn (the production from million acres), million of grain sorghum (the production from million acres), and of barley (the production from 318, 000 acres).
