My study explores a way of looking at the unity of thinking and making in the context of architectural design. Questioning the prevailing conceptions of this unity that take a linguistic model of representation as their model, this study proposes the phenomenal unity of experience as a basis for understanding the act of making architecture as a way of thinking in and of life. What is outlined in a critique of the prevailing views is that the unity of thinking and making in architecture is not an indiscriminative unity of these two moments on a holistic conception of making architecture as an effective tradition of thinking. On the contrary, this study suggests that architectural making should be understood as the unity of two distinct moments of reflection that cannot be reduced onto each other without waiving the agency of the maker in a tradition of making.

How do digital media (mobile phones, GPS, iPods, portable computers, internet, virtual realities, etc.) affect the way we perceive, inhabit and design space? Why do architects traditionally design, draw and map the visual, as opposed to other types of sensations of space (the sound, the smell, the texture, etc.)? Architecture is not only about the solid, material elements of space; it is also about the invisible, immaterial, intangible elements of space. This book examines the design, representation and reception of the ephemeral in architecture. It discusses how architects map and examine the spatial qualities that these elements create and questions whether - and if so, how - they take them into account in the designing process. Karandinou argues that current interest in the ephemeral in contemporary culture and architecture is related to the evolution of digital media; and that it is related to the new ways of thinking about space and everyday situations that new media enables. With sound and video recording devices now being embedded in everyday gadgets and mobile phones, capturing sounds or ephemeral situations and events has become an everyday habit. New animation techniques allow designers to think about space through time, as they are able to design dynamic and responsive spaces, as well as static spaces explored by someone over time. Contemporary video games are no longer based on a simple visual input and a keyboard; they now involve other senses, movement, and the response of the whole body in space. This book therefore argues that the traditional binary opposition between the sensuous and the digital is currently being reversed. Subsequently, new media can also function as a new tool-to-think-with about space. Designers are now able to think through time, and design spaces accordingly. Since the turn of the 21st century, "design thinking" has permeated many fields outside of the design disciplines. It is expected to succeed whenever disciplinary boundaries need to be transcended, and it is imperative when thinking "outside the box." Gauging and guessing is a metaphor that represents the duality in the process of architectural design, between logic and intuition, reasoning and chancing, the explicit and the implicit. Throughout history, this duality implies not only different design methodologies but also deeply-rooted design mentalities, the conscious and the unconscious. Gauging is associated with consciousness, representing a will to pursue certain results based on intentional thought processes. Guessing, on the other hand, is associated with unconsciousness, representing an aleatoric chancing to fulfill one's inner possibilities. However, "gauging consciously" and "guessing unconsciously" inevitably happens on a spectrum with two extremes, either limiting or diluting the discipline of architecture. This thesis investigates the opposite situations of gauging consciously and guessing unconsciously, experimenting with new ways of involving technologies in the design process to look for the possibility of paradigm shifts. In the first phase, the two research projects "Fake Fake-hill" and "Data-Matter to Data" are attempts to examine the notion of gauging unconsciously and guessing consciously respectively. Using naturally-formed rock art and intuitive model-making that engages hands as the prompts in combination with engaging the digital tools, we aim to show the possibility of pursuing a precise design result without the limit of human consciousness, and of pursuing a natural result without the necessity of unconsciousness. In other words, being naturally precise and precisely natural. Based on this research, the second phase of the thesis tested the methodology of combining the two sets of paradoxes with two design proposals, in search of the "architectural coincidence" that remains oscillating in between.
