Food and Agricultural Trade; A Proceedings Transportation has always been important in agricultural trade, as reflected in the 1940 Yearbook of Agriculture: Transportation, whether provided by commercial agencies or by the farmer himself, is a vital necessity to the economic functioning of agriculture. Income growth overseas and accompanying changes in food preferences and diets are most often cited as drivers behind the unmistakable, more than decade-long shift in us. Agricultural exports from bulk commodities (e. G., wheat and soybeans) to monbulk items (e. G., meats and fruit). While income growth and some policy measures to liberalize trade are key determinants in the rise of perishable shipments, advances in transportation technology and logistics are equally important. For us. Agriculture to benefit from growing overseas demand for, say, fresh fruits and vegetables, shippers must be able to deliver them to purchasers thousands of miles away with no substantial loss in freshness and quality. Perishable agricultural products, many of which u.s. Farmers could only have dreamed of selling abroad just 10 years ago, now account for about 20 percent - a growing share of total us. Food and agricultural exports. Moreover, the cost of transporting perishable products is, in many cases, substantially more than for bulk commodities: 5 to 10 percent of the free on board (fob) value of grain versus over 30 percent for important horticultural products such as citrus and frozen potatoes. In part due to declining transportation costs and new technologies for handling and extending shelf life, perishable products are a rising component of trade in food and agricultural products. Excerpt from Marketing and Transportation Situation During the second half of 1975, marketing spreads may widen as rising wage rates, energy and material costs, and transportation charges continue to exert an upward push on operating expenses of food marketing firms. For the year, marketing spreads are expected to average around 10 percent wider than in 1974 when they rose by an extraordinary 20 percent. Much of this year's expected increase has already occurred. The retail cost of a market basket of foods produced on u.s. Farms averaged (annual rate) in the first quarter of this year, up percent from the previous quarter. Increases were greatest for processed fruits and vegetables, bakery and cereal products, and sugar. Compared with a year earlier, retail costs in the first quarter were up about 6 percent. Retail prices for market basket foods decreased in March for the first time in 8 months. Gross returns to farmers (farm value of quantities of farm commodities equivalent to retail units) for market basket foods averaged $721 (annual rate) in the first quarter, down percent from the previous quarter and down percent from a year earlier. Returns decreased for animal products from year earlier levels, but returns were up sharply for process ed fruits and vegetables, oilseed products, and sugar. The farm value for market foods decreased each month from November to March, but turned up sharply in April. Farm-retail spreads widened sharply in the first quarter of 1975 as returns to farmers dropped. The spread between the retail cost and the farm value of the market basket averaged (annual rate) in the first quarter, up 6 percent from the previous quarter and up 18 percent from the first quarter of last year. The farm-retail spread - which represents charges for assembling, processing, transporting, and distributing the products in the market basket - widened sharply from year-earlier levels for most items. Increases were especially great for fats and oils products, sugar, bakery and cereal products, and processed fruits and vegetables. The increase in food expenditures was about times the rise in food prices during this period. Food expenditures increased more than food prices because consumers shifted to more expensive foods, bought more services with food, and bought more restaurant meals. Although food expenditures have increased, the real cost of food must be measured against income. Food expenditures have not increased as much as consumer incomes. From 1957 to 1967, income per person increased 52 percent or nearly double the ih crease in food expenditures. Thus, the percentage of income spent for food declined from an average of percent in 1957 to percent in 1967. In terms of the time the wage earner must work to pay for food, he was better off in 1967 than in 1957-59 because wages have risen faster than retail food prices.
