Excerpt from Catalogue of Dahlias, 1928 IF bulbs are received before IT IS convenient TO plant them, place in a shallow box of moist soil until time to plant outdoors. If roots become too dry it may kill the eyes. Handle roots care fully, if the necks are broken, or crowns injured it may ruin the tuber. Soil preparation - When it is possible, apply manure and spade the soil in the fall, then spade in the spring. The soil should be broken up to a much greater depth than where the bulb is to be planted. Some even spade and fertilize 12 to 18 inches deep. Any good garden Soil will grow dahlias. An open sunny location is best; Plant about 6 inches deep and 3 or 4 feet apart in well prepared soil. About one-half pint of bone meal and a pint of sheep manure or some other well-rotted manure-may be mixed with the soil for each dahlia. Some sand and leaf mold may be used and especially when the soil is heavy. Planting time - The time varies according to the locality in which they are to be grown. They are usually planted from May 1 to May 20. Never plant when the soil is wet or soggy. Lay the tuber down flat, surrounding it with sand or light soil; never let the tuber come ih contact with the fertilizer. BE sure and lay the tuber ON its side with eye or sprout up. Cover two or three inches deep and fill in the remainder after the plant comes up. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
