Book Description
Modest prices, generous servings, friendly owners, and a devoted local clientele all define these cafs, bars, restaurants, and pizzerias where you can taste the traditional everyday cuisine of Argentina in authentic settings. New or old, each one of the seventy profiled here has details that make them worth visiting. Many were the settings for clandestine political meetings in the days before the May Revolution; others provided inspiration for the artists and writers, including Jorge Luis Borges, who frequented them. At one bar, the most prestigious young tango musicians of Buenos Aires gather nightly, and, after a few drinks and a few empanadas (made by the owner himself), spontaneously perform. There’s a tiny parrilla–steak house–known not only for the best roasted meat at the best price but for its eternally festive atmosphere and chaotic charm. At another intimate pulperia, simple homemade meals are served communally at a wooden marble-top table. The Authentic Bars and Cafs of Buenos Aires also includes Gabriela Kogan’s recommendations of what to eat at each venue, a map, and a glossary of Argentine food.

Book Description
During the mid-twentieth century, Latin American countries witnessed unprecedented struggles over the terms of national sovereignty, civic participation, and social justice. Nowhere was this more visible than in Peronist Argentina (1946-1955), where Juan and Eva Per—n led the region's largest populist movement in pursuit of new political hopes and material desires. Eduardo Elena considers this transformative moment from a fresh perspective by exploring the intersection of populism and mass consumption. He argues that Peronist actors redefined national citizenship around expansive promises of a vida digna (dignified life), which encompassed not only the satisfaction of basic wants, but also the integration of working Argentines into a modern consumer society. Drawing on documents such as the correspondence between Peronist sympathizers and authorities, Elena sheds light on the contest over the vida digna. He shows how the consumer aspirations of citizens overlapped with Peronist paradigms of state-led development, but not without generating great friction among allies and opposition from diverse sectors of society. Consumer practices encouraged intense public scrutiny of class and gender comportment, and everyday objects became charged with new cultural meaning. By providing important insights on why Peronism struck such a powerful chord, Dignifying Argentina situates Latin America within the broader history of citizenship and consumption at midcentury and provides innovative ways to understand the politics of redistribution in the region today.

Book Description
Much has been written on the Argentine dictatorship and the transitional justice movement that brought its members to justice. However there has been no study to date of the economic accomplices to this dictatorship and the recent advancements in Argentina towards holding these actors accountable. What was the role of banks, companies, and individuals in perpetuating a murderous regime? To what extent should they be held responsible? As the first academic study on economic complicity in Argentina, this book attempts to answer these questions. Renowned human rights scholars investigate the role played by such actors as Ford, Mercedes Benz, the press, foreign banks, and even the Catholic Church. Across numerous case studies, the authors make a compelling argument for the legal responsibility of economic accomplices. A groundbreaking interdisciplinary study, this book will be essential to anyone interested in transitional justice, business, and human rights.
