The purpose of the present study is to understand the poor living standards of the Hilsa fishermen and problems regarding the fishing activities and hardship about their daily life. The exploitation scenario of the Hilsa fishermen is another major purpose of conducting the study. The methodology of the study is basically qualitative in nature. Both primary and secondary data are used to conduct the study. Semi-structured interview guideline is used to gather necessary information from the respondents by applying case study method. The findings of the research show that the monthly income of the Hilsa fishermen is not fixed that affects on the food and health condition of their families. Robbery, impact of natural disasters, and insufficient support from the government are the major problems for Hilsa fishing business. Both Arotdar and Hilsa fishermen is the victim of these problems but effective measures can be taken to deal with these problems. The role of NGOs can be developed and the support from coast guards and foresters can be useful to improve the Hilsa fishing business that can affect positively on the socioeconomic condition of the Hilsa fishermen.

Many fishery biologists and policy makers involved in inland fisheries management and planning are unaware of GIS technology and its potential for fisheries planning and management. The FAO Inland Water Resources and Aquaculture Service (FIRI) has been active for the last 19 years in promoting the use of GIS and remote sensing in fisheries and aquaculture. Promotional activities have been carried out through training, projects, field missions, and oral presentations and publications. However, a manual to use along with GIS software for the fisheries biologists in the field explaining GIS in a way that is understandable to non-GIS users had not been produced until now. This manual was written to overcome this knowledge-gap, it is a "do-it-yourself" manual giving a short introduction to GIS software and its applications in fishery science. The overall objective of this manual is to encourage fishery managers to use this tool (GIS) to foster the sustainable use of natural resources. There are five main sections in the manual: GIS concepts and functions and key tools provided by ArcView 3.x, Geographic coordinate system and map projections, Raster data and analysis, Regression analysis, and Application case studies. All sections are accompanied by exercises that have been designed to illustrate key applications of GIS in inland and marine fisheries management. Also, a custom-designed ArcView grid regression extension is included to show the integration of GIS with surplus production models.

Fisheries and aquaculture contribute to food security and livelihoods of millions of people in Asia. Both women and men are engaged in fisheries and aquaculture. In the past ten years, many actors have worked on raising awareness on women’s contribution as well as promoting gender equality in fisheries and aquaculture. This study aims to consolidate the efforts to date to provide recommendations for action and future studies. Its objective is to answer the following questions for small-scale fisheries and aquaculture in Asia: (i) What is the division of labour between women and men in specific fisheries and aquaculture practices and what are the differences with respect to their access to assets, resources and entitlements? (ii) What are the drivers of such differences? (iii) What could be critical entry points and opportunities for addressing inequalities and discriminatory practices? To answer these questions, the study conducted an online literature search on gender and fisheries and aquaculture in Asia, selecting articles published between 2011 and 2021. This period was selected to understand the contemporary condition and state of knowledge, and since we aimed for an exhaustive list of literature, some limits in the time period was necessary. The review included both published peerreviewed papers in journals as well as other research and project reports that are available online. In total, it reviewed 253 publications on fisheries and 210 publications on aquaculture. The top four countries where studies were conducted are India (44.3 percent of fisheries and 24.3 percent of aquaculture articles), the Philippines (35.6 percent of fisheries and 17.6 percent of aquaculture articles), Bangladesh (27.7 percent of fisheries and 32.9 percent of aquaculture articles) and Indonesia (30.8 percent of fisheries and 20.5 percent of aquaculture articles). The findings based on each research question are presented in this publication.
