Book Description
Excerpt from First Principles of Faith Since the substance of the following treatise was written, some remarkably able works, handling many of the topics here discussed, have appeared, notably A Study of Orzgz'fls, by Dr. Pressense T/ze P/zz'losop/zy of Tkez'sm, by Dr. Ward T/ze Basis of T/zez'sm, by Dr. Harris P/zysiml cma' Mbrallaw, by Rev. W. Arthur, m.a. And T/ze Unify of Nature, by the Duke of Argyll. This fact led me to consider whether these productions met the want I had aimed at supplying, and thus rendered the publication of my manuscript superfluous. The result was a con viction that, notwithstanding the rare excellence of these works, there was still need for such a book as I had attempted to provide. I therefore issue this production in the hope that it may, in some degree, take part in promoting the cause of truth and human well-being. Unbelief continues to project its shot and shell into the lines of Christian Theism and, though its former attacks have been well met, it must not be left to repeat them unresisted. The present volume only aspires to be one of many contributions, made in vindication of those great principles which underlie the experience and practice of true religion. Excerpt from The Faith of a Quaker There arise also the insistent questions which beset all mystics, and which in Quakerism demanded a corporate, instead of an individual, answer. Was the light infallible? Was the claim to it an assumption of spiritual exaltation. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from First Principles and Perfection: Or the Birth and Growth of a Christian The following work was originally published serially in the "Christian Standard," of Cincinnati - a religious paper of wide circulation and great influence. In response to numerous calls made by the readers of that journal, it is now submitted to the public in this more permanent form. It should be stated that, while the author is identified with the people known as Disciples of Christ, or Christians, and is heart and soul in sympathy with them, he alone is responsible for what is herein contained. The work is in no sense an authoritative exposition of their belief. Still, the fact that so many eminent and earnest men among them have given it unqualified and warm expressions of approval, will show to the general public that the production, if not an adequate, is at least, as far as it goes, a correct representation of their position and doctrine. Book Description
Origen’s On First Principles is a foundational work in the development of Christian thought and doctrine: it is the first attempt in history at a systematic Christian theology. For over a decade it has been out of print with only expensive used copies available; now it is available at an affordable price and in a more accessible format. On First Principles is the most important surviving text written by third-century Church father, Origen. Origen wrote in a time when fundamental doctrines had not yet been fully articulated by the Church, and contributed to the very formation of Christianity. Readers see Origen grappling with the mysteries of salvation and brainstorming how they can be understood. This edition presents G. W. Butterworth’s trusted translation in a new, more readable format, retains the introduction by Henri de Lubac, and includes a new foreword by John C. Cavadini. As St. Gregory of Nazianzus, Doctor of the Church, wrote: “Origen is the stone on which all of us were sharpened.”

Excerpt from Faith, the Principle of Missions Such and so great, such and no less than this, is every Christian. What then is the principle by which, in this holy and heavenly task, the Christian is sustained? That principle is faith; and the delineation of this truth is the one object of the present treatise. Book Description
Excerpt from Principles of the Interior or Hidden Life: Designed Particularly for the Considerable of Those Who Are Seeking Assurance of Faith and Perfect Love Tunas is a modification or form of religious expe rience which may conveniently, and probably with a considerable degree of propriety, be denominated the Interior or Hidden Life. When a person first becomes distinctly conscious of his sinfulness, and, in connection with this experience, exercises faith in Christ as a Savior from sin, there is no doubt, however feeble these early exercises may be, that he has truly entered upon a new life. But this new life, although it is in its element dif ferent from that of the world, is only in its beginning. It embraces, undoubtedly, the true principle of arestored and renovated existence, which in due time will expand itself into heights and depths of knowledge and of feeling; but it is now only in a state of incipiency, main taining, and oftentimes but feehly maintaining, a war with the anterior or natural life, and being nothing more at present than the early rays and dawnings of the brighter day that is coming. Book Description
Excerpt from The Convert's Guide to First Principles, or Evangelical Truth: Sustained by the United Testimony of Our Lord Jesus Christ, the Holy Apostles, and Our Pedobaptist Brethren MY apology for offering these few pages to the public, is found in the history of the recent glorious revival of religion in this city. Soon after I came to this place, God poured out his Spirit upon the Baptist church and congregation, and many were converted. The first Lord's day in April, I baptized 27; the sec ond, 54, and so on until near 200 were added by bap tism, and 20 or 30 by letter. At this time, sprinkling, pouring, dipping, and close communion became the to pic amono' our opponents. To put a. Stop to this, and turn the attention of the people to the Bible, I made public this proposition I will put myself under legal bonds, to pay as a free reward, $3000, for finding in any of the received versions of the Bible, sprinkling or pouring for the action, and infants for the subjects of baptism to be paid on finding each of the above. To decide this impartially, the texts supposed to contain the doctrine shall be submitted, without de bate, to Dr. Taylor, of Yale College, and two learn ed pious Quakers. This proposition must be accept ed by some clergyman or respectable member of one of the churches of this city. No one accepted the offer; but directly, pulpits, presses, pamphlets and newspapers, like so many guns from a common batte ry, were made to bear upon the Baptist church and her doctrines, and every movement in the religious community indicated a war of words. I made appli cation to respond through the Chronicle, but was promptly refused. These, with other circumstances and events of the time, furnish at once an occasion and an apology for my present efi'ort.
